If you don't go thru Richmond your really taking the scenic route ;) Give me a shout we'll do a quick photo op and I'll buy ya a cup of whatever (and you can vouch that it really has 260,000 on it) have a safe trip and a good 4th.

Joe

PS: heck of a repair, hats off to ya

Sounds good, I will have my daughter with me, but I will make a point to stop. I plan on leaving the Beach for Charlottesville at about 7 AM. I will be stopping by during my trip, assuming that when I put this thing in gear she MOVES.....

In gear - does that imply that you've already fired up the engine?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Well I had high blood pressure twice tonight;

1) Initial Startup. It just cranked. About the third 10 second crank it began to sound like it would start. Then it started and it sounded like a diesel engine, and that noise went away very fast. It sat without starting for about a month so I guess all of the lifters leaked down. I immediately realized that I could not put it into drive...and turned it off. I had to re-route the fuel lines that were blocking the manual linkage and then the manual shift was fine but that was scary..

2) the second high blood pressure moment was as it went through first, second, third and then OD and it shifted beautifully... The tranny is responsive and snappy, I went up a hill and the engine began to labor a little and the tranny decisively downshifted on its own (with no gas pedal action from me to get it to kick down). While I have experiened that before, the transmission downshifted BEFORE I realized that the engine was laboring and just as I was about to kick it down. Its reading my mind now.... very very cool...

Amazingly everything is perfect, no leaks (other than the case half), it was quick and responsive, a WOT took me up to 95 before I knew what happened, and the suspension with the new control arm bushings and the thermoplastic strut rod bushings was tight and responsive. the ride is like GLASS, smoother than it ever was in the past. When I got home there was NO coolant smell at all. Best of all, my O2 code and my P0717 ISS sensor codes are GONE! Hooray Beer...... I am off to Philadelphia in the morning, I will update this thread when I get there tomorrow night. Thanks for all of the support, this was a hard job and I learned a lot.

I never thought it would look like this again

ISSandCrossoverdone003.jpg

ISSandCrossoverdone002.jpg

New dog bones, upper radiator hose, ISS sensor, TCC solenoid, Pressure solenoid, Bank 1 O2 Sensor, Post CAT O2 Sensor, axle seals, throttle body cleaned and all new gaskets, Water Pump Crossover gaskets and cleaned out EGR ports, cleaned EGR and replaced gasket, lower control arm bushings, thermoplastic strut rod bushings, oil pressure switch (ac delco), oil level sensor, fuel pressure regulator, heater pipes, heater hoses (2), hose from heater pipe to tank, upper radiator hose, green hoses, upper and lower pan filters/screens and pan gaskets, side cover gasket, pump and lower control valve assembly gaskets and spacer gasket, transmission fluid filled mount, new positive battery bolt and lead lug, new magetized oil drain bolt, air filter, changed oil and filter, 12 quarts of dexron. BIG JOB.....

ISSandCrossoverdone001.jpg

I was worried however!

So, how did the old guy hold up through all of this and are you going to make him eat his words ("It'll never run again")? Job well done Mike. Congratulations. If that doesn't qualify you for the "Hall of Fame", it ought to at least get you a commendation medal.

He has not seen it yet, I can't wait. He has not let up either. The other day he said, you are just going to close the hood and drive to PA and VA?, I was like of course I am... He said no testing?, I said, when I get done, I am done, it will run perfect... no testing will be necessary, it will be fixed. Sounds cocky I know, but I am methodical, its more confidence. He was surprised that I was torquing every bolt to the spec in the manual. I think he will change his tune now.

After this job, I have even greater respect for those who timesert their engines....OMG. The next time I do this job however, it will be easier...

Well I have done about 100 miles. I want to say OMG, the car feels like it is brand new. No noise, groans, rattling, air or anything. It is hard to hold it back, I look down and I am doing 85. At 65 it feels like it is sitting still..

I replaced the tranny mount and the dog bones. Since I bought this car, I have had a problem where when I hit a bump, the car gets skippy/vibration and it feels like the rear end is not tracking right. I thought that this was related to my rear knuckles. I have pushed and pulled the rear wheels and they are very right with no movement at all, so there was no evidence of a rear knuckle problem and I had blamed the skippiness on them. NOW, the car tracts perfect over bumps and all of a sudden there is NO vibration. This is either due to the tranny mount, the dog bones or mayby even the carriage bolts not being torqued properly. Amazing.

The car wants to go and responds seemlessly, I can't get over the change WOW...

Oh in my list of replacements, I forgot to mention that I had my alternator rebuilt.

 I'll find something to fix! The next job I do is my wife's upper and lower intake manifold gaskets in her 2002 Monte Carlo... that is a tough job also but I did it on a 2001 Grand Prix, so it will be easy

This thread - and some with head gasket replacements and a few others that I have read over the years - IMHO should go into a new heading in the discussion group - step by step - on how to do various repairs. Bruce, whaddya think?

Congrats on the successful repair! You have too much invested in that car to sell it now - it is like a new car. I think the input speed sensor job qualifies for the hall of fame award.

You need to drive by the old guy's house and make sure he sees you.... then remind him of his wrong prediction that it would never run again ;)

Thanks guys, this was an all encompassing job, I worked on so many different aspects of the Northstar (tranny, suspension, cooling system, fuel system, electrical system, engine mounts and emissions systems), but while it was a big job, as I mentioned, the timesert job is the ultimate. The last timeserter I think was KHE, if you find his thread, I don't think you will find any complaints from him during that job nor did he appear to get stumped or stopped by any problems... THAT IS IMPRESSIVE.. Plus he picked up the car with a car carrier and took the ENGINE out from the top...AND he was quick. ME? my car was laid up a month with this job, but in my defense, I worked on it on weekends and ordered parts from gmotors during the week, and the job kept getting bigger and bigger. I think that Growe3 did two timesert jobs... We really should put together a section for timeserters, those members deserve the Hall of Fame, I now have a greater appreciation for our timeserters. I have learned SO much from this job however and we should benefit from my experience.

I want to thank Logan for his "bolt drop" method, without that method, I could not have done this job.

I am in Virginia Beach. The car has run amazing, really amazing. Its FAST, WOT's are much more impressive and it handles terrific. Most surprisingly is that I was in bumper to bumper traffic on 95 south today for 20 miles and the temp NEVER went above 217 and it was 85 out, and it stayed in the 212-215 range most of the time, wow... Last year, I was hitting 230 peaks, but my crossover gaskets were leaking, the radiator was shot, and my water pump rear seal was leaking, I constantly smelled coolant. I basically replaced my cooling system (radiator, water pump, heater pipes, heater hoses, crossover gaskets, by pass hose, upper radiator hose). My cooling system is rock solid now, and I think that will help my engine last longer. When I pulled into rest stops on 95, I lifted the hood, the engine felt cool, there was NO coolant smell at all, no bubbling, no bulging hoses, etc... the engine was very cool after having done 70 for hours.. amazing..

It handles great, the thermoplastic strut rod bushings are very responsive, almost too responsive, I need to get poly stabilizer bushings for the rear, I think I have a SLIGHT over steer.

I fixed a problem that I did not start out trying to fix. As I mentioned, when I hit expansion joints in the road, my car would skip as if directionally it lost itself for a slight moment, it was a side to side movement and I thought it was coming from the rear. Well I replaced the left tranny mount and engine torque struts (dog bones) the tranny mount was separated and the dog bones were cracked and loose.. I can only think that bumps were causing the engine to rock, could this affect the steering? Could this have caused my skippiness on bumps? Because the skippiness is gone.

I have had a couple of problems however. On the way down my AC started blowing warm. I got the AC1340 code. KHE explains the AC1340 code here

http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?sho...446&hl=1340

I have tried toggling the system from 90 to 60. It sometimes starts blowing cold. I had it evacuated and recharged in Pennsylvania, it was about a pound low and I knew it needed recharging, they put dye in so I could be able to see where the leak is coming from.. Anyway, I may need to buy the actuator. I have had a problem where when I am going UP a long hill, I loose AC out of the vents, so maybe this is related. I have tested the tank under the headlight, replaced the vacuum hose to it, and replaced the check valve with no results. By the way my parking brake works but it is slow. I might go to a caddy dealer tomorrow and see what the actuator goes for, I brought a good selection of tools with me..

I also got the P0741 code on the way down, cleared it and never saw it again, who knows why it showed up, but I have intentionally allowed the engine to seriously labor up long hills to see if I could induce it and it never came back.

By the way, I am using 15W40 diesel oil and I used NO oil. The engine sounds amazing, I am using no oil, and it leaks less. Someone on the other site cautioned me against using this viscosity of oil in the NS, what do you guys think? I am thinking that I could cause the case half leak to get worse using this oil if I ever decide to use 10W30 again, what do you think? By the way, my gas mileage is definately down, and I am guessing its related to the oil thickness...but I will check the gas mileage again...

Overall, I am thrilled with the car, it was a hard job, but NOT as hard as a timesert job.... Thanks guys
