BodybyFisher
I am going to do the ISS Speed Sensor this weekend (Memorial Day Weekend). I plan on replacing the following: Side Cover Gasket (#30 in manual) Case to Case Cover gasket (#44 in manual) Sprocket Support to Case Cover gasket (#43 in manual) ISS Speed Sensor (#14 in manual) Plus the two lower filters and the cooler line o-rings that I can access. I have not played with the rubber seals these cars use, do I coat them with an RTV and if so what kind of RTV (red or blue). I do not plan on replacing the side scavenger filter just clean it, is that ok? If I can get the filter to body seal I will buy one. Do you think I should replace the Axle Case Cover Seal (#37)?, and can I tap it in while the case cover is off? BodybyFisher
Yes, thanks to Logan's idea, I am using long bolts to slowly drop the carriage about 8 to 10 inches so that I can clear the frame with the side pan. Logan sent me the bolts. Thanks AGAIN, Logan! I'll get even Getting the Julian Date off my transmission was a PITA, I had to take the tag off the tranny and clean it up.. My Julian Date is 6066, what is wrong with JUNE 1996?, why the secret code... (I am sure there is a good reason) Here is my parts breakdown and cost so far, many parts of which are not related to the ISS Sensor job, but that I plan on replacing, this weekend. Look at the price of the COVER GASKET!!!!! $47, it cost more than the SENSOR! Think about this, the ISS SPEED SENSOR is $25, and Caddy wanted $1600 to do this job... hopefully, that price won't look good to me I am looking forward to a tranny that does not leak like a sieve. BodybyFisher
Here is a photo of the Tranny Case Cover Gasket, NOW, I know why it was so expensive, its sandwiched aluminum, and I am glad I bought a new one, as I doubt that it would be good once its removed, that black material has a rubbery feeling to it The ISS Sensor is on the right and my new Bank 2 O2 Sensor is on the left: Here are the new coolant crossover gaskets: Here is the new Oil Level Sensor: Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

BodybyFisher
That's a lot of labor sitting there. You have that right, it's all labor, the dealer gets about $700 for the crossover gaskets and they quoted me $1600 for the ISS sensor, the total for those parts is like $45.... BodybyFisher
This is a hard job. The electrical conduits are really hard to get out of the way. As someone mentioned this job is not for the faint of heart.. All I am doing is removing parts and putting related parts, brackets etc in large baggies to keep the parts organized. I don't think I will get this done until need weekend unless things begin to go smoother tomorrow. I need Logan to tell me about his experience with dropping the carriage. This is a big job.. Logan
It seems I can only use 'fast reply.' Board still messed up a bit..been trying for 15 minutes to reply.. I did not remove the radiator. I did drain the coolant. I did discharge the AC. I have a AC vacuum pump. Easy job. I left the ABS unit alone. I did unbolt it from the cradle. 2 rubber mounts. Easy to do on a 2001. I did not disconnect the engine harness. I think the 2001 is a bit different then a 1996. I did have to flop the PCM and harness onto the engine. My PCM is in the air intake. Had to disconnect the steering column at the rack. Service manual has you remove remove O2/CAT heat shield. PIA. Easier to cut and bend shield for clearance. Then bend back when done. Watch out for rear bank cam senseor. Tight. BodybyFisher
OK, I was ready to drop my carriage, pulled one of the carriage bolts and they are M12 1.75. The bolts Logan sent are M14, not sure what year those were from. No one has metric threaded rods only SAE. I had to order two M12 1.75 threaded rods, they are one meter in length. Got them at MCS on line, their customer service was open Saturday. So this job has been postponed till next weekend, but I am ready to go now. Car is now sitting on truck stands. I had my alternator fully rebuilt for $155, it was due according to my friend at Montrose Starter and Alternator rebuilders. I may put in the coolant crossover tomorrow. BodybyFisher
I would hate to think that my intermittant P0717 problem could have been caused by a short at the transmission connector. But there is a strong chance that this intermittant P0717 code could have been caused by moisture in the connector. If you are getting the P0717 code, I strongly recommend checking this connector closely for dampness, debris, spiders nests, etc.. The following picture is a photo of the transmission connector, it was damp, gritty, and it looked like a spider make a nest Here is another of it before cleaning In the following photo I think water/coolant was running down these wires to pool at the bottom collecting at the plug as seen by the dirt in the photos above Here is the plug cleaned up Here is the finished plug, taped to stop water intertrusion Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
BodybyFisher
When I was a kid, I recall seeing a plug on the torque convertor. Draining the converter was an important part of changing the tranny fluid. Well today I was working on the electrical harness and I noticed a plug on the case that looked just like the plug that was on the torque convertor, When I open the case, I will look to see what this from the inside. This may just be a service port. See the circled plug: Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

Greasy dirt or dinosaur nests will not cause any problems before the insulation is compromised. However, the contact pin end of that connector (and its mate) is a different story. Hit the contacts with a shot of contact cleaner and inspect the pins with a magnifying glass. WD40 will eliminate any moisture. Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! Jim, both sides of this connector the male and female sides were clean and dry. I was thinking that moisture got into this side of the plug where the wires go in to cause problems. You and I had spoken about this connector a couple of times. KHE
I would hate to rip into the trans to replace a good input speed sensor. Are you planning on reassembling the water crossover before lowering the cradle? If so, it may make sense to drive it for a few days to make sure the ISS code is still there before replacing the sensor. On the other hand, if you have to remove a bunch of parts that you already have off the car, it might not make sense. If so, it may make sense to drive it for a few days to make sure the ISS code is still there before replacing the sensor. On the other hand, if you have to remove a bunch of parts that you already have off the car, it might not make sense. I am fully committed to replacing the speed sensor at this point, I have too much off the engine and I am there. My tranny needs a re-seal from the side pan, to the side cover to the bottom pan. I am at 96k miles so its time for some re-sealing, dumping of fluid and changing of screens. On Friday I stopped by my local Cadillac dealer and spoke to the 'major surgery' mechanic that drops carriages and does time-serting. When I told him what I was doing he gave me a BUNCH of tips and said I didnt need to remove the AC compressor and to just drop down the LEFT side of the carriage, he does that all the time. That is great. I had a setback as the bolts that Logan sent me were 14MM and my carriage bolts are 12MM, so I ordered two 1 meter long 12mm 1.75 threaded rods from MCSonline. I get out at 12:30 on Fridays, so I will get a chance to do some work this Friday. In the meantime, I am going to clean up parts and order a set of ignition wires as mine show burns from arching, they look like they are due for replacement. This has taken way longer than I anticipated but I an only working on weekends and its a bigger job than I expected given that I am replacing so much at one time so it not just the ISS Speed Sensor When I get done with this job, I will have done the following ISS Speed Sensor Cleaned Tranny Plug New side cover gasket New side pan seal Replaced Side Filter Rebuilt the alternator New heater pipes Replaced green silicone hoses Replaced upper radiator hose New heater hoses New crossover gaskets Cleaned EGR Ports in crossover Cleaned EGR R&R and cleaned Throttle Body replaced gasket R&R and cleaned Intake Spacer and replace seal Replaced Oil Level Sensor Replaced Oil Pressure Switch Replaced positive battery bolt including lead lug New Air Filter Cleaned Fuse/Relay Center Replace ignition wires I can't wait to see this thing run.
