I hope y'all are all prepared and everyone remains safe during the storm.

Here's hoping it won't be as bad as they are forecasting and both you and your Cadillac come thru fine.

Thanks Jim, the winds are ramping up here on Long Island. Moved the cars out from under the trees, I have two trees in my front yard that have two main trunks going into a single root system at ground level, these types of trees have been known to split down the middle in high winds with one trunk going one direction and they other going the other direction. During Irene we lost about 20 of these types of trees in the neighborhood and they caused a lot of damage to pools, houses, cars and power lines. Hey wait, I need a new car, Ill be right back I have to move my car back to under the tree,

The path of the storm is right over my house. The cars are garaged, so our worst fear is an extended power outage.

Jim,

Do you have a generator and plenty of fuel? Nothing worse than "camping at home".

I saw on the news this morning that electric crews from all across the country are headed toward the area so hopefully, if the power goes out, it won't be out for long.

When Irene was approaching the NE coast I was driving west on I-90 from Buffalo to Cleveland. The east-bound side of the Interstate was almost a steady stream of electric utility crews travelling in groups of 30 to 50 vehicles headed to various staging locations. Those folks know how to coordinate a response.

Wow Jim, thats right you live in NJ.... be safe, the last I saw the storm surge could be 12 feet. When I was a kid there was a hurricane and Wildwood was devastated, houses were moved right off their foundations and taken long distances. Good Luck to you, I changed the oil, spark plug and cleaned the air filter on my 6500 watt generator today

It makes sense to connect the generator to your house electrical network and check it out before the storm. Not a good idea to play with hot wires in a wet and dark basement.

If you have enough drinking water, you'll be fine for a few days even without power. It is not too cold to be miserable at home.

Don't forget to stock up on beer, gin, and bourbon...

I think I am ready as I will ever be here. We are on the outskirts and expecting heavy rain and 50 mph winds. Maybe some snow also but it won't last long, it is supposed to be back in the 60's and sunshine on Friday & Saturday.

Kevin - we rarely get bad weather here; I'm on the Philly side of the state. A hooked-in generator is a big expense and we really don't have a place to put one, so I didn't buy one. We are good for a couple of days without power. This time of year, we can go without heat or A/C, and we have enough canned food and stuff to get through. Past that, we put lots of dog food and bird seed down and go for a drive for a good meal and a shower, then come back.

Ok, power went off at noon after the 13,000 volt feed in my back yard arched against a fallen tree, loud explosion, we are on generator power, we have a pilot hot water heater so we have hot water, have a gas stove, and I just hooked up the wireless modem and the refrigerator freezer and a few lights.

The wind is worse than Irene, my trees are taking a beating but still standing. They have evacuated the coastal areas as the water is coming ashore. I got a call yesterday from the power company to expect the power to be out from 7 to 10 days. Lots of fun.

Here in Webster, MA we have gusty winds. Light rain. A power pole went down down the street but the wires survived. I have my spare car battery connected to a 12v bulb. Will have enough light to read a book for a few days. :) No matter where i park my car, there is still probability it may be hit with a falling tree... arghhh

Generators are noisy! :D Just ask your neighbors.

Mike, Jim stay safe in Long Island and NJ. You will be getting the most of fun.

Ok two trees down within sight of my front door, one crushed my neighbors car,a tree tore down the electric service to my neighbors house and covered the generator. Winds are crazy, must be 100 mph, terrifying to be outside in this to fill the generator. I cant believe my two big trees have survived so far, knock on wood...... Lots of power out. Storm surge during the full moon should be something

Mike its great you can get on here and communicate with the rest of the world. I hope you get through this in good shape. So what did you decide to do with your car, put it under a tree or away from a tree? :wipetears

Haha, I have my cars carefully placed where I estimate trees wont fall. Many of my neighbors I find out parked their car a block away in a shopping center to avoid falling trees. I dont have power, but have my Verizon FIOS fiber optics modem and wireless working just fine with the Wacker GP 5600 generator. It seems to have calmed down a bit, my wife and I are watching the most recent episode from The Mentalist and my daughter and her friend downloaded a movie via ITUNES to her IPAD. What did we do before all of this technology.

I have to go out soon and fill the generator with gas, its a scary task in the dark with 70 mph gusts.....

I must say we here in upstate NY must be in a bubble. We got very lucky as considering what happened elsewhere it was like any other day here. Thank god. We have lucked out many times and I thank god for that. I send my prayers to all that have been less than fortunate.

Thank god my power did not go out. I run 10 aquariums, including 3 salt and 7 fresh. I keep 4 car batteries on trickle chargers and have inverters that run my pumps. but days would not be good at all.

Mike,

Glad to hear that you and yours are OK... :)

THanks Jim, no power, but the generator is running terrific, we have wireless, cable, refrigerators. The cleanup continues, 90 percent of Long Island is without power, Manhattan is a big mess. Mayor Bloomberg told Obama NOT to come to New York that we have too much work to do, go to New Jersey instead. A couple of subway stations were full with water (south ferry and several others). My neighborhood has tons of trees down, crushed cars, powerlines down all over. I was lucky, no trees down
