Fluid Leaking from Rear Pass Shock??

SPreston2001

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I went out to the garage this morning and noticed a puddle of fluid coming from the rear passenger side wheel. Since im working from home today I went inside grabbed my laptop and took it out to the garage so I can work and play at the same time. My first thought was I had a rusted out brake line but when I jacked up the car and removed the wheel I couldnt find any leaks coming from the braking system. I checked all the brake lines, hoses, caliper, and nothing. The fluid is dripping from the bottom of the shock but as far as I know, shocks dont have fluid in them. The fluid is a reddish brown color and I cant seem to find where its coming from. I couldnt imagine tranny fluid getting all the way back here and its only dripping from the bottom of this one shock!! Any thoughts on what this could be? Thanks!!

I can't say for sure on the 2000, but the 1996 does have fluid in the shocks, when I changed mine I removed the electronics package and quite a bit of fluid/oil was in them. From my experience, shocks need oil it them to lube them and for the dampening to function, leaking standard shocks in the past we common.

Thanks I learned something new today! I never knew shocks had fluid in them, I always thought they were gas operated. I will keep an eye on the problem and report back when I know for sure what it is. Thanks again.

One of my rear shocks shows a trace leak and a mechanic $aw Opportunity there. I plan to change them in a year or two, and to use OEM or Monroe air electronic shocks. Monroe is the OEM manufacturer, I believe, guessing from the appearance of Monroe "aftermarket" shocks for my car.

Where did you find Monroe electronic shocks? When I was shopping for rear shocks for my '96 SLS, Monroe didn't have any air leveling, electronic shocks for my car.

Even though my car was in excellent condition, I could not justify $3000 (dealer price) for rear shocks or even $1800 through an internet for OEM shocks.

Rock Auto (see attached 2K JPEG cropped from screen shot) has them as part number 40018 for $415.79 each. Delcos are $573.79 each. The AC/Delco doesn't have the same part number for the 1997 ETC as for the 1996 SLS, and the Monroe isn't listed there. The Monroe site doesn't list one for the 1996 SLS either.

Looking back at Rock Auto for the 1996 SLS, they list the AC/Delco electronic rear shock for the 1996 SLS as part number 580108 for $568.79 each, though.

You know, I was thinking. The reason why I was hesitant to say there was oil in the 2000 strut was because of the magnetic ride control system. I am not familiar with it at all. When did magnetic ride control begin, was it an option and how does it function can someone explain?

Thanks

I do believe that there is shock oil in every shock absorber sold for production cars today.

I didn't know if that was the case with a magnetic strut for it to function. But after reading this, the magnetic fluid is just as integral to the functioning of the strut

It looks like my next car will have magnetic ride control, very cool

Does Cadillac have selective control, to choose touring and sport? If yes, when did that come out?

The newer STS's do have the selective feature.

The DTS's do NOT have the selective feature.

Darn it.

But even without the selective feature, I LOVE the Magnetic Ride Control.

If you ever get down this way.... you can drive it. I think you will like it. :D

Hey Jim, I am working on a job where I would travel quite a bit, so I might just take you up on that!

On my 99 Concorse you can select the ride using the GM Tech II scanner form soft to hard. I have never looked to see if there is a cheet such as the OBD center in the clymate control but it may be there???

I believe that the Touring package cars since 1992 or so all have electronically variable suspension. My 1997 ETC does. Until they managed to keep magnetic particles in suspension in the shock oil to vary its viscosity, they used electrically controlled valving to change the damping.

BBF,

Like your link points out, Mag Ride technically started in 02 on the STS, but you would be hard pressed to find one. When I got my 01 STS I looked for an 02 with Mag Ride for a while and could not find one. There were some 03 STSs with Mag Ride, but they were out of my price range since they were so new/low miles.

Ide love to drive an STS with Mag Ride, I saw a demonstration once with a vette when they first put mag ride on them. They hit a speed bump at like 50 or 60 with two vettes, one with mag ride and one without. They had a close-up shot of the speed bump as the tires went over it and the vette with the mag ride never left the pavement while the other vette left the ground going over the bump. It was a very dramatic difference. The video might be on youtube.

My next caddy will definately have mag ride, Im just hoping prices drop enough to allow me to get an 05 or newer. The only thing I dont like about my 01 is the front wheel drive. They did a very good job putting 300 horse to the front tires, but theres no comparison to driving the rear tires.

My 02 has magnetic ride control. My shock developed a clunk going over bumps and when I took it off one day and tilted it, a bunch of fluid came out of the hole where the air hose goes onto it. Do you think that maybe some of the fluid leaked out and that's why it was clunking? Do you think there would be any special fluid for the magnetic ride control shocks? Where would I find fluid to put back in them? I know the passenger side one was replaced before I purchased it and I really don't want to replace it. The cheapest I found was from GM parts direct for $459. I've been driving around with and SLS shock putting up with the "Service Suspension" message because I don't want to pay that much. I've looked for used ones, but since the magnetic ride control was only used in 02 and 03 Sevilles, it's next to impossible to find one.

Mike,

Mine is MR. It is NOT selective, (darn it) ut it is MR.

I have tried explaining to people, how it rides and handles compared to ones that DON'T have the MR. Without experiencing it, there is really no way to explain it.

But I LIKE IT :D:D and fully plan on having it on my next one.

That actually wasnt the video I saw, but it was alot better. The one I saw only had them hitting a speed-bump. That was amazing to see the difference on that track.

Thanks for posting it.
