BodybyFisher Posted June 2, 2008 Author Report Share Posted June 2, 2008 I just called the owner and when I asked if it was overheating, he paused for about 5 seconds and said what would make you think its overheating? I said the LOW COOLANT MESSAGE on the dash, they can overheat if they are not maintained properly and the head gaskets breech. He said maybe it needs a thermostat, but I just drove it from Pennsylvania... that is what the Getty station said... he was cautious with his answers.. Marika Posted June 2, 2008 Report Share Posted June 2, 2008 Two messages, check coolant level and fuel level low. I have my 92 Caddy listed on Craigs List as well. No takers so far. The person from Canada who originally wanted the car has changed his mind so the car is up for grabs again, in case anyone is interested. If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. No more seat belts, ABS brakes, traction control, air bags or stability control. JimD Posted June 2, 2008 Report Share Posted June 2, 2008 Mike: That red '98 STS has not had a lot of TLC. The head lamp covers have not even been cleaned up. If you decide to investigate, pull the pressure cap and see if there is evidence of Bar's Leak powder or the GM part # equivalent in the coolant reservoir. Ed Hall Posted June 2, 2008 Report Share Posted June 2, 2008 Mike, This car you mentioned reminds me of a very similar 1998 Cadillac SLS I looked at almost 4 years ago. It had 90k on the odometer and they wanted $4000. Anyways, I went and looked at it and I questioned the owner whether or not it had problems with overheating. I could kind of tell that he was not happy that I asked that question but he told me that yes it did but he had put in a new thermostat to correct the issue. The next thing I did was start the car and let it idle while I went into the onboard computer. There were a tons of codes and after about 10 minutes of idling, I noticed that the temperature on the dashboard was just 3/4 the way up. I told the owner that I thought the engine might have a head gasket problem and would only be able to offer $1800. If you look at the right side of the trunk it looks wet and has white stains.. I think either the rear window or sun roof is leaking. It looked practically new and they paid $6k for it. The owner had very little interest in it so they were able to negotiate the low price.
