1993 cadillac sedan Deville

Recommended Posts

I would like to thank you guys for letting me join. I have a 1993 sedan Deville it is a base car with a 4.9 and have owned it 3 years. It is a California car bought out of Michigan and imported to Canada by me with very low miles on it. We use it to travel in and actually just got home from Nashville last week. I have some issues with it but they are small ones(I think) as the dash is digital and the fuel data center works intermately as in comes on stays on for a while then goes back off I think it might be the BCM how can I test it to be sure. It makes almost impossible to retrieve the codes and after changing the A/C compressor the service engine lite is also coming on and going off.

Sounds a lot like a loose ground.

I would check all the grounds around the A/C compressor area and make sure there are no loose connections or "pulled" ground wires.

Intermittent problems are the most difficult to diagnose. Catch it when it is working and see if you can get any codes at all out of it. That may "point" you to a specific component or area.

You can get the codes read for you free at an Autozone or other high-energy parts outlet.

Thanks for the replies I did actually get some codes when it was showing. I wrote them down and place them in the glove box I will get them to-day and post what I got with definitions as I do not want to relay on my memory lol. Thanks for the welcome Oldcadtech. I should also mention at times the letter C will show in the right side screen in the fuel data section.

e48 ext gas recirculation problem (EGR)

e52 PCM memory reset

F31 which I can not find a definition for

That are the codes I got quickly as I was on the road thanks for any help

The F31 is a BCM problem which strengthens the loose or corroded ground theory.

E52 is a battery disconnect - disregard for the moment

E48 means the computer commanded the egr to open and didn't see the correct change it expected to see - disregard for the moment also.

E048, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) system Problem

Read this thread on the E048, your EGR system is dirty and you need to clean it out, there are EGR ports when you look down in the throttle body, rod them out with a hanger or use round wire brushes. You might even pull your EGR valve and clean it up with wire brushes. Do not submerge it in cleaning fluid but you can soak it up to the pindle. Replace the EGR gasket when you pull the valve..

You might have a bad BCM. On the E48, the car at operating temperature. Have someone power brake the car in drive while you check to see if you have vacuum to the egr valve. You probably have a bad or sticking egr valve.

Thanks I am off to check out the right side kick panel for grounds. The question I have about the egr is can it be cleaned with out removing it at through the tb as I will need to get a new gasket ordered for it if I need to remove it. Is there a sticky on how to rod out the egr tubes ?? I would like to fix both issues to be honest I do not like to leave things I would also like to clean the tb

Egr needs to be removed for proper cleaning. Has 2 ports on the bottom.

Make sure torx screw spins and the valve closes when released.

Also try not to get cleaner up into the solenoid portion of the valve.

It is likely you have carbon buildup in it

You can re-use the manifold gaskets, according to the manual, but I would get new ones if you need to clean out the EGR passages under the manifold. The ones on the car could be 23 years old.

The EGR passages are 1/2" tubes staked to the intake manifold - They are most likely coked closed with oily carbon. Hold the throttle body open and rod them out with a screwdriver. You may be able to reuse the EGR valve gasket if it is the compacted graphite type and it is not damaged upon removal.

This is a 4.9 there are no EGR passages under the intake like the early NSs. The intake does not need to come off. There are 2 tubes when you look down into the throttle body, those same 2 tubes run to the EGR valve. You can clean those tubes by using a coat hanger (the gurus words). I have shot carb cleaner down there and let it sit, and with the EGR valve off used compressed air to blow out both tubes, cover the tubes at the egr to stop the solvent from blowing all over. The EGR needs periodic cleaning, i posted links above.

So bottom line I am going to remove the EGR get a new gasket rod out the tubes going to the Throttle Body (I was told an old spedo cable on a drill is a good help all so??) under the EGR then clean the Throttle body. Then get back to the BCM this might take a couple of days thanks
