My Radiator just took a dump!!! Help Again PLEASE:-)

Recommended Posts

Hey Guys.....it's me again:-) I just got back from the grocery store and seen that my caddy was dripping coolant like crazy! Upon inspection we found that the side plastic housing on the radiator is cracked....so time to replace it...grrrr!! I guess I'm blessed though cuz it could have been the water pump:-) So my question is....I called Auto zone and Advanced Auto parts and they both have new ones in stock for 155-156.....which brand is better spectra or ready radiator? Ohhh and can you guys give my hubby a walkthrough on how to change this bad boy....we gotta pick it up tonight and he's replacing it in the AM.....Thanks in advance:-) You guys ROCK!!!

I used a spectra in my 96 Deville with no problems, make sure you dont have an oil cooler before you buy it. You probably don't though

Installation is pretty straight forward if you ask me, you need to futz with the side brackets and remove the tranny cooler lines, not hard

If you want to save money you can get one for about $80 shipped on ebay. Good quality Ive used a couple of them, same as any other radiator. If you need it done NOW then you have no choice then buy local. Like everyone said remove the radiator bracket remove the fans and all lines on the radiator, i think its the a/c lines bracket that can be a bugger seperating it from the condenser, but otherwise not too tough of a job. Use the right coolant when you fill it back up.

I'm praying that this is the last of the issues we'll have to worry about for a while...I did check the codes on the dash just because and I got 2 history codes....pc1520 and pc1599 both history....we just replaced one of the shift solenoids a month or two ago....could that be the problem? Thanks again you guys have really been helpful:-)

Ohhh... now, when you mentioned that unique Cadillac, I have remembered you! biggrin.gif

Make sure you use NEW o-rings and gaskets when you install the radiator if it contains cooler.

This might sound dumb but how much coolant do I need to add since it's empty? Thanks

Its not dumb at all, what I usually do it mix a gallon of Dexcool and a gallon of distilled water making a 50/50 coolant to water concentration. Then I just fill it up from that point, since you have TWO gallons of the mix on hand, you will have some of the 50/50 mix left over on the shelf for future top offs....

When you fill the system, let the cooling system warm up to normal temp, rev it a few times and shut it off and let it cool off

Then before you start it again, top off the coolant tank to the proper level and then check the purge line by gently pulling the purge line off the top of the tank, let it hang down, and start and idle the engine, then go look at the hose to see if it is flowing coolant, it should flow, if it flows turn car off, reattach purge line to tank then take it on a short ride to stabilize the system and let it cool again. If it does not flow, it means that your purge line is clogged and it needs clearing, come let us know and we will tell you how to clear it if you dont know how, but whatever you do DO NOT blow into the line to clear it, you will need to MANUALLY clear it by removing the 'bolt with a hole in it" by the TB and clearing it.

Let us know how this goes.

You should have replaced both while it was opened up. Chances are you be back again replacing the other one.

Just replaced my coolant yesterday. It took about a gallon and a half. After you refill it and purge the air as BBF directed, take it for a ride and give it some WOT. Chances are you'll get the CHECK COOLANT LEVEL message (I did). Top it off again after it cools down.

Thanks everyone for all your advice :D everything is working great!! I love my caddy and hope to get another 50000 miles plus on it :) I wanna thank my awesome hubby for replacing the radiator for me....he just had neck surgery about two months ago and even with his neck brace on he still fixed it for me....I'm truly blessed!

Why didn't you just have the leaking tank replaced??? Much cheaper than replacing the entire radiator...
