More swollen capacitors

Recommended Posts

Well I am doing maintenance to my once high performance desktop. So far I have had to replace the CPU cooling fan retainer, I had to replace the power supply, I had to replace the video card fan, AND, now, I happened to notice that I have 3 swollen capacitors and one popped on the video card. They are 820 uf 6.3 volt electrolytic caps and I plan to buy them at www.digikey.com and replace them. I once had swollen caps on an ABIT motherboard that I replaced to revive the motherboard.

Here are a few photos of the bad caps

You can see the tops are domed in this photo compare 1, 3 and 4 to #2 that is flat

Cap #3 is the same as the one to the right, you can see its taller because it popped.. Its hard to believe that I have 6 fans in this machine to keep it cool, the new video card fan is in the background

You have a temperature problem in that case. You need to add fans to bring it down, or you will continue to have problems.

Maybe but maybe not, I have two fans pushing in the front, two fans pulling in the back, plus the power supply fan, plus a video card fan, plus a hard drive fans.

I am using 3 CD-ROM/DVDs, 5 Seagate Cheetah SCSI hard drives and a 500 watt PC Power and Cooling power supply.

That ABIT motherboard I spoke of was involved with the problem caps that were circulated back in the 90's, that was my kids computer. This video card is about 6 years old, and I constantly use two monitors. In addition I use the Creative Audigy Platinum sound card.

You could be right because with all of these components, the wiring really blocks air flow. I am debating buying a new video card, but the price of 4 caps is $2 vs about $45 for a dual head video card. But this looks like a superior card > http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/Se...0&CatId=933

8500GT $22 after rebate with free shipping since they are a lot less powerful than the current gen. But faster than the 6200.

OH, but you need an AGP card, I guess.

Thanks Bruce, yes, this board needs an AGP card, I use two monitors so i need a dual head, and would like a min of 256 mb of memory on it. I will check that out however, thanks. I am beginning to think that the trouble of replacing the caps might not be worth it..

This card was originally over $200, it was a decent dual-head card based on the FX5600 Nvidia chipset, I was right it was 2003 >> http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?...mp;pagenumber=1

You are correct, I probably can get a better card for a song now.

Thanks Jim, that is great background on this. I knew it involved fraud and that ABIT took a big hit over it. I had never seen a compilation of info like that however, Thanks

I have a heavy duty PC Power & Cooling power supply, I am going to have a look at the caps, maybe I can revive it, its an amazing power supply.

Also great info, thanks for covering this. I think our BOSE amps suffer from cap problems also...

The company I work for uses a lot of Dell computers. The Dell GX270 has been notorious for bad caps.

A couple of years ago, Dell agreed to replace a BUNCH of motherboards.. nationwide, because of bad caps.

We replaced over 300 just here in the Dallas / Fort Worth area.

There's a rather (in)famous story that made the rounds a few years ago: It involved a chemical engineer who left one company and joined another. It was said he took with him a proprietary electrolyte formula that was slightly deficient. ABIT was said to have been a victim of that. I'm not entirely sure about the details. But, it cost ABIT a bunch!

Electrolytic capacitors are specified in units of "farads," (and maximum DC/AC voltage) or, more frequently, microfarads/volt (millionths of a farad)/volt. 10mf @ 50Volts might represent a common value for an electrolytic capacitor.

It might surprise you to learn that you can actually predict the failure of an electrolytic capacitor. Yes, you can! When an electrolytic capacitor approaches failure level, it begins to indicate an increase in it's "Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR)." Google "ESR Meter" and you will see. "Spent" or nearly spent caps are easy to find with such a meter. The meters are available in a variety of price ranges. I wouldn't be without one.

Regards,

Warren

There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises
