seanr1976
Good Morning, Everybody Over the last week or so, I've noticed a problem with my 92 Eldorado with the 4.9L V8 (non-Northstar). When the engine is cold--first thing in the morning, for example--the engine will start, but it doesn't want to continue running. If i don't press the gas for a few moments to rev the car up, it will just stall out. Could this be an idle speed regulator problem? Is there a sensor that controls the engine idle when the engine is cold? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! ---------------------- 1992 Eldorado 4.9L
Cadillac Jim
It sounds like it might be the ECT but the OBD codes will likely tell the tale a lot more clearly and accurately than a SWAG. Here's how to run the codes: http://www.caddyinfo.com/readingcodes.html -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars. Ranger
Sounds more like an ISC motor problem.
seanr1976
If I'm not mistaken, ISC = Idle Speed Controller, right? I want to make sure of what I'm asking for when I go to the parts store. In regard to the engine diagnostics, I did run through that protocol this morning, but nothing out of the ordinary came up. I don't believe I'm having a computer problem--I'm pretty sure my issue is being caused by a device that is failing. ---------------------- 1992 Eldorado 4.9L

Listen, we are NOT looking for a computer problem or implying that you have one, when a device is failing or failed it will SET a computer CODE. THAT code will help us to diagnose what is wrong with your car. POST the codes here. Your problem to me is sounding like a TPS sensor. DO NOT just replace parts, it will get expensive. Post your codes here so we can look them over. DO YOU KNOW now to check your codes? seanr1976
Yes, I know how to check the codes, and here is what they are: I033 I034 I037 I052 I get these codes all the time because I am having an electrical problem with the instrument panel cluster. No other codes are displayed at this time. ---------------------- 1992 Eldorado 4.9L
adallak
Indeed, why won't you just press warmer and OFF simultaneously till information shows on the driver info center and write down so called trouble codes if any? Your problem may have a very easy and inexpensive fix, but we should know first what device failed. My guess is a stuck ISC motor, but there may be other causes as well. Check the coonections to related sensors (disconnect/clean/reconnect) or if that does not help, replace the sensor/sensors. adallak
Ooops, these are I -codes. sorry. Sounds like bad connections or bad grounds to me. lothos
Do you hear a ratcheting noise from the ISC motor when you turn the engine off? The gas pedal will also move up and down when you turn the engine off. WARNING: I'm a total car newbie, don't be surprised if I ask a stupid question! Just trying to learn. seanr1976
No sounds are heard from the engine when it is turned off. The only thing out of the ordinary is that the car doesn't want to remain running when started in the morning. I have been getting the IPC trouble codes for months; they are nothing unusual, and I am working out an apparent wiring problem in order to correct those codes. ---------------------- 1992 Eldorado 4.9L
BodybyFisher
With no codes I would clean the TB and check the FPR for leaking If when its warmed up it runs, its because the O2 sensors are correcting a fueling problem, in open loop, that does not occur, check the FPR Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
seanr1976
What is "TB?" I think FPR means "Fuel Pressure Regulator," but I don't know what "TB" means. ---------------------- 1992 Eldorado 4.9L

Cadillac Jim
With these codes I033 Loss of Supplemental Inflatable Restraint Data I034 Loss of Powertrain Control Module Data I037 Loss of Air Conditioning Programmer Data I052 Keep Alive Memory Error you have the PCM, PZM, and AMC offline. Until you fix this, you have no information on what problems these modules are detecting, if any. I would venture that the PCM being off-line means that your system is running open-loop all the time and that could explain your problem. I would fix this before proceeding. The network is on the purple wire. Check and clean any connector that has a purple wire, and check the cable on that connector. -- Click Here for CaddyInfo page on "How To" Read Your OBD Codes-- Click Here for my personal page to download my OBD code list as an Excel file, plus other Cadillac data -- See my CaddyInfo car blogs: 2011 CTS-V, 1997 ETC Yes, I was Jims_97_ETC before I changed cars.
