trans fluid change

Yes. Remove the trans fluid supply line at the radiator side tank. I forget if it is the top or bottom one, but someone will chime in on that. Attach a hose to it and put it in a bucket. Then start the engine and pump it out. Once it stops flowing, shut down. I forget how much it will take, but when I did my '97 Deville I used 12 or 13 qts. WITHOUT draining the converter.

The top line is the pressure return to the transmission; you will want to adapt a drain hose into the radiator side tank top fitting because transmission pump pressure is applied to the bottom fitting on the radiator side tank. Allow the pump to push all the fluid through the side tank, through your hose and into a bucket with the gear selector in PARK and the engine at idle. Stop the engine as soon as the old fluid stops flowing.

With a long section of hose in hand, and a bucket beside the driver's door, I sit in the driver's seat with my hand on the key. It goes much easier the 2nd time! Thirteen quarts will do the refill with most of a quart left over.

Technically won't the pump run a little dry if the hose is allowed to stop pumping out fluid? I would think that wouldn't be a good thing, or doesn't it matter since you are in park? Will this suck all the fluid out of the pan too? I'm thinking about doing this to my 97. Which transmission line do you take off then? The top one? This would be very nice if I could do this and not have to drop the pan. How many people have done this on this forum? Any adverse effects? I'm very curious.

If there were any ill affects, I would not recommend the procedure or use it on my cars. And I do use it.

I am going to do this tomorrow, I made a special tool for this job that screws into the upper radiator tranny cooler connection. I don't think that it gets the tranny fluid out of the pan, it may get some, but I will let you know in my ISS sensor job thread. How many quarts does the tranny take after an overhaul, it cant be much more than 13 qts can it?

I did it on 4.9 with no ill effects. When it was nearly empty (you get rather foam out instead of fluid) I put a qtr of fresh fluid in just to get all old stuff out. There should be a post of mine in tips section. I turned off the ISC motor to avoide that surge when you start the engine to pump out ATF. I did the same to powersteering as well. Ah, it was a long day since I replaced tranny and PS return lines too.

You still should drop the pan. When you see all the clutch material on the magnets that needs to be wiped off you'll understand why.

You obviously need a new pan gasket, right? What's the torque rating for the pan bolts?

Mine is leaking bad, but I think an after market pan gasket was used (CORK).

OEM pan gaskets are reusable. I reused mine with no problems when I did my '97. I forget the torque spec's, but it is pretty low as I recall. Someone will likely chime in with them before I get to look them up as I am at work.

As long as the engine is turned off when air appears in the line, no harm will be done to the trans. The trans must be in park in order to prevent damage to the clutches. I would also drop the pan and clean the magnet after pumping out the fluid. The torque for the pan bolts is as follows: Initial - 27 in-lbs, Intermediate - 53 in-lbs, and Final - 106 in-lbs. There is a sequence to torging the bolts - I use a marker to number the holes on the pan - it makes it much easier to follow the sequence while on the creeper under the car.

My service manual specifically states not to reuse the pan gasket so I never have. It is cheaper to buy the trans. service kit which includes the screens vs. just the pan gasket. The OEM gaskets have steel bushings and the torque specs are for the OEM gaskets. None of the aftermarket gaskets have the steel bushings so anyone's guess on the proper torque spec is as good as mine when dealing with the aftermarket gaskets...

Something to think about while you are dropping the pan and allowing the little bit of remaining fluid to run down to your arm pits just so you can clean the magnet.

The magnet is intended to attract and hold ferrous material in a location where it cannot be recirculated. Whatever ferrous material is attracted to the magnet also becomes magnetized. Therefore, as more and more ferrous material clings to the magnet, the magnet surface area just keeps getting larger. And a larger surface area magnet is not a bad thing.

You can also buy some of those magnets from radio shack. BBF, that is an awesome idea. I'm going to also change my fluid this weekend and I will add a few magnets in there. What did you use to make your little fitting for the tranny cooler line in the radiator side tank?

I got this tubing at an auto shop that sells brake lines and hand them bend it for me. I will probably cut off one end and attach a hose to it. I think but don't quote me that this is 7/16, but you will need to match it up.. Mike

MAC has a nice setup see his post in this thread, you might be able to find that fitting in a Lowes or good auto supply

Very similar to the water conditioning magnets. Many people believe that strong magnets placed on a fuel line leading to the engine will increase gas mileage and reduce emissions. Two neodymium magnets placed on opposite sides of a fuel line will do the same thing as the expensive "fuel extenders" being sold elsewhere.

Accelerating the Aging of Wine and Liquor

This is a new one to us, but apparently, some people swear that exposing wine or liquor to strong magnetic fields accelerates the aging process. We have even seen commercial units being sold that contained our neodymium magnets. We have not experimented with this yet, but you may want to. Please drink responsibly.

At some point GM started using quick disconnect fittings for the transmission plumbing to the radiator. You will need to remove the fitting from the end tank and thread in an adapter for the hose connection. This is the adapter I use.

I think a short piece of 3/8" brake line will thread into the radiator connection. I wouldn't put any additional magnets inside the pan - the magnet inside the pan from the factory should be adequate.
