dexcool

I've been getting advice from several techs to remove dexcool as soon as possible and replace with green coolant. Please, any advice for or against would be appreciated.

Bad advice.

Has the Dex-Cool been serviced before today? If not, you are overdue on the 5 year schedule.

Drain and refill with Dex-Cool.

I can tell you that I have mixed feelings about it , but alot of the older memebers really like it. I would say to change it more often than whats recommended. The techs at the dealership where my car is being worked on most of them dont really care for it. Everyone has a way of looking at something, but if its changed often it will be ok . :)

If it's changed not often but per the RECOMMENDED schedule, its fine.

It's 5 years or 100,000 miles, most people think its 100,000 miles and FORGET about the 5 year part which is equally important!

AND REMEMBER, Once you change to the "green stuff" the cycle is every two years between changes! Do you see why some MIGHT recommend going green?

Never underestimate the amount of a persons greed.

Why would any tech recommend green coolant over DexCool in a Northstar engine? Someone is feeding you a lot of misinformation. Both Dexcool and green coolant are ethylene glycol bas but the corrosion inhibitors are different. Green coolant has a silicated corrosion inhibitor package. Silicates deplete with use and are abrasive to the waterpump seal. Forget to change the green coolant after 2-years/24000 miles, and the corrosion inhibitors are gone and the head gaskets start to rot. If you need to know what is involved in replacing headgaskets, see my other thread on repairing the engine in my '97 STS due to an improper repair by a "tech"...

The corrosion inhibitor package in DexCool does not deplete over time/use and is a superior product to the old green coolant. Once you run green coolant in an engine, the silicates plate the internals of the cooling system. If you run DexCool in such a system, it will need to be changed every two years as the silicates in the system negate the corrosion inhibitors in the DexCool.

Stay with DexCool and change it every five years/100,000 miles.

I agree with everyone else. Stay with Dex. If your worried, change it every 4 years vs 5. These "techs" are just spreading myths. Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they speak.

Mikeal,

The Guru is a well respected GM powertrain engineer who used to post here and taught us well. Much of what you read here is gospel from him.

He is sort of like Yoda..

Yoda, the ancient and revered NS Master, lived his final years hiding on the swamp planet of Dagobah. Nine hundred years old, Yoda had trained Caddyinfo members for eight centuries, and was very powerful in the Force.

While we hold his teachings, we miss his wisdom and support when non-believers show up. He WAS the final word on all things NS

Or is that, the FINAL word on all things NS, HE WAS...

Many of us have his actual teaching saved on our memory storage devices.

Speced for The Green Stuff

Michael,

What you are saying is that there are great advantages in using Dex-Cool over using the Green stuff.

In turn, even though the specs on my North Star are to use the Green stuff, I should consider using Dex-Cool and changing it every 2 years.

I believe since your system is already coated with green, its doubtful you will gain any benefit. I asked the same question regarding my 91 and it was recommended that I stay with GREEN. Maybe someone else here can opine on this.

NO - 1993-1995 Northstars use green coolant as DexCool was not used until the 1996 model year. You will not realize any benefits by switching to DexCool as the silicates have plated the internals of the cooling system in your car and that will negate the long life properties of the DexCool.

Sadly, his voice was silenced by an evil and mis-guided foe known only as "middle management" who believes that the Caddyinfo Jedi were growing too knowledgeable in all things NS. The truly converted await patiently in the shadows for the mighty hand of downsizing to smite "middle management" and free our guru so once again he can illuminate the darkness.
