'03 Deville has check coolant light

Recommended Posts

Those sensors are known to "get stuck". I hit the reservoir from time to time and it helps. No kidding.

I tried that and I think it worked....for a minute. :) But it came back. Tomorrow I hope to take the reservoir tank off and flush it out to clean any crud on the sensor.

Q: Do I lose much coolant taking the hoses off the reservoir tank? Should I pinch off the lower hose with hose clamp pliers?

I don't think you will loose too much, especially if the coolant level was low as you noted. Take it out flush it, check the wires, jump the connector and you will know whats going on. Good luck with the car, and post some photos,

I added Dexcool today and put it at about 1 and 3/4" below the lower ring of the neck. What is the correct amount? It took about 1/3 of a gallon. That really concerns me.

And I noticed today that there is a white residue on the black insulation.that's attached to the underside of the hood. That tells me it may have overheated some time in the past....correct? I'm going to keep a close eye on the coolant level and redo that block test.

I also noticed today it needs an engine mount. Just noticed the dealership had penciled in on his water pump repair receipt an estimate of $425 for a motor mount. The seller didn't divulge that....Pffft

Will do Mike. Were going to do a little detailing on her tomorrow. Do I need to upload the photos to say webshots or wherever to post them here?

I'm going to use my turkey baster to get the coolant out of the tank before removing it. I was worried about coolant coming out of the hose that attaches to the bottom of the reservoir though...does that sit high enough where not much comes out?

If the car passed the block test, I wouldn't assume the worst unless the previous owner added a bunch of coolant before the test. Do you smell coolant as in an external leak?

If the CHECK COOLANT LEVEL message is displayed and the level in the surge tank is at the proper level, it is a bad sensor. The surge tank needs to be replaced since the sensor is molded into the tank.

No coolant smell anywhere and no signs of coolant leaks so far. Will keep a close eye on coolant level and leaks.

Can there be a HG leak, but the coolant leaks out into the exhaust therefore fooling the block test?

No, combustion is muct more powerful than coolant operating pressure, combustion would get blown into the coolant passage tainting the coolant with by products. I recently used the block tester and it turned colors in 15 seconds. The only possibility is that straight coolant was in the tank, but the likelihood of that is nil. Put your nose in the tank and take a whiff.

Have the cooling system pressure tested if you are losing coolant it will become obvious under pressure

That's good to hear the block test is conclusive for HG failure. I hope there's no more coolant loss and maybe there was air in the system after the water pump replacement and the coolant was just never topped off.

So what's the correct coolant level for the surge tank? There are no "FULL" marks I can see.

My '05 Deville has a translucent surge tank and there is a "full" arrow that is molded into the translucent portion of the tank that indicates the proper level. My guess is the '03 is the same.

Check and make sure the radiator cap gasket is intact, able to hold supplied pressure. Polish the brass filler neck on the expansion tank. Take the overflow hose and extended it and put it in a plastic coke bottle or milk jug if your thinking its a head gasket.

My 1997 Eldorado chrome rims are also in perfect condition. I have seen the beads and the chrome does not go past the rim, much less to the beads.

I have been thinking that some of the rims that people report as having chrome all the way into the beads may have been originally pained, and chromed to increase their value or by owners who wanted to upgrade that way. Do ALL of the chrome rims of the 2001-2002 rims have chrome into the bead?

I have also heard that if someone ever used tire inflate/sealer that it can damage your wheels

See this article on how the sealer can damage chrome wheels and MUST be cleaned out.
