My desktop died and can't get up

Recommended Posts

WinXp on my desktop is sticking at the mup.sys, and can't continue to boot into WinXP. This normally means something is wrong lol. Amusingly, it does not really indicate what is wrong, other than it is likely to be a hardware problem. Just after mup is initialization, so something is not responding.

I tried reseating the needed components, removing unneeded components, different combinations of RAM to try to ferret out the culprit. No components have obvious visual damage, such as open caps on the motherboard. I also have a symptom that my Wife reported the breaker for the electrical outlets opened and had to be closed a couple of times Wednesday. So it is possible the computer was going offline then, and that suggests the power supply to me. There is a fan in the power supply and it is not spinning, which also suggests the power supply, although I seem to recall that this model was advertised as a quiet model, so it may only use the fan when it needs the cooling.

So, I can either just give up and get a new desktop, or risk $60-75 on a new power supply and see if that fixes the problem. Fry's opens at 9 so I'm headed for a new power supply prolly lol.

Bruce,

Based on your description...my first guess is power supply...

And my second guess is power supply. :D

It could be the registry...but that will usually give you a hive error.

It could be a driver...but not likely as it was running ok before you left.

By the breaker throwing in the house a couple of times...my 3rd guess is now power supply.

Hope that is all it is.

New power supply, same problem. Took out the gaming video card, booted off the motherboard graphics, same problem.

Put the hdd in an external usb to sata case, and it reads fine. I'll run a scandisk on it next to see if it has some errors.

This is an Asus motherboard, and as I say I can't see any hardware faults or smell any hardware faults, but I think I'm starting to rule out stuff.

Sorry Jim, I didnt see your post

I had a PC Power and Cooling power supply go bad last year, I was shocked, its such a high quality unit, but the electrical power where I was living was seriously inadequate, I can only think that had something to do with it

Ruled out the Power Supply (new one did not change the problem). Running a scandisk on the Drive in an external enclosure now. It may be stuck in phase 2 of the scandisk, which suggests the harddrive has some issue(s). May or may not be the original problem, as that can happen due to the crash(s) also.

Bruce, did you check for any domed caps?

Good, also, last year if you recall, my video card had a few domed caps, that stopped it from booting, I am sure you checked but just in case

hmm chkdsk found a couple of errors in phase 2 (index check) then exited instead of completing. Now it says can't access the drive. I think the hdd is toast.

If the chkdsk /r doesn't get it, you might try to get the HD readable again with a chkdsk /f or a scandisk. If that doesn't make the disk readable again and you need files from it that you can't retrieve from a backup, look for a data recovery program or service. You can get one or more recommendations by calling the manufacturer and asking; have the model number, OS and format type (NTFS, FAT32, whatever) at your fingertips when calling.

Yes, chkdsk is failing out. Tried a manufacturer's diagnostic, but it won't start because it can't recognize the drive attached to USB as an external drive.

I would suggest trying to get your hands on a bootable CD. At least you will be able to verify the condition of the motherboard.

Just to complicate the process, I picked up a new HDD and a copy of Win7. Put the new drive and the old drive in as sata 1 and sata2. Now win7 is running chkdsk on the broken drive as part of installing to the new drive /doh. If this does not work then I'll just drop the old drive altogether and work on recovering the info I need. I mostly live on the internet any more but there are some things that will be a pain to redo.

Thanks Warren. I'ma let win7 chkdsk keep thinking at 45% done and see if it works it out on its own. if not I will reboot without the drive attached, finish win7 install, then attach and reboot, and try to run the seagate diagnostics on it. The $50 seems interesting since the money back guarantee and all, but only if nothing else works I guess.

Gave up and took the bad drive offline; win7 install completed with the new HDD, and installing Windows Live, etc now. Later I'll rehook the bad drive and try to run diagnostics.

Ran the Seagate diagnostic tools and the bad HDD fails short selftest and long selftest, so looks like the HDD is/was the problem. Interested to see if the HDD can be 'fixed' other than by reformatting and retesting.

Disconnected the bad drive and I'll just have to lump the missing stuff. The new drive/ps/win7 are working fine, excpt no printer driver for our HP photosmart 1115.

Bruce,

I have not used it, but I have heard good things about the program Warren mentioned.

Hard Drive Mechanic.

I have used Steller Phoenix Windows Data Recovery.

I have used it and was not overly impressed with it's data recovery abilities.

In my opinion, it is way overpriced at 100 bucks...

I have a 320 gig drive with data on I kinda need.

I am considering buying Hard Drive Mechanic to see if I can get any of it back.

The reviews on Amazon said that the program did not work and the company did not respond to refund requests, despite their advertising.

I have the win7 up and running and have recovered most of my access. If you have good luck with a product let me know though and I'll buy it when you are done.

I've heard good things about that program. It's disappointing to hear otherwise.
