Texas Jim
Need a little more info... Do the dash lights work? Does the rasio work? Do the headlights work... and if so.... what happens to the lights when you hit the starter? Do they go dim? Do they go OFF? Do they stay the same? With no more info than you gave... my first impression is , you need to clean the battery cables. The positive cable is actually more than one cable under that red cover. Take it apart and clean real well. That may be your only problem. Give us some more info to work with. Could also be a bad / dead battery.

Ranger
Check the battery cables for corrosion and if they are OK have the battery load tested. I've had bad batteries right of the shelf.
BodybyFisher
Check the battery cables for corrosion and if they are OK have the battery load tested. I've had bad batteries right of the shelf. Ditto, check the battery cables especially the positive cable take off the insulator and clean the two cables and lug that is in there. The starters RARELY go bad in these engines. Texas Jim
You said the lights DIM when you hit the starter and it clicks. I would be looking at the battery cables and the wires going to the starter.

krazz27
Every since i turned key 7 times its been starting fine without cleaning cables, is there a safety or security system that i need to check?? Like i said i bought the car yesterday from a old lady who said the alternator was out as told by a "friend" so now before i resell the car i want to make sure that i will not run in to this problem again please any info on this problem if it is still a problem would help thanks.... SPreston2001
Well that could be your problem, the alternator. If its draining your battery them it will appear that the battery is dead when its just being drained by the alternator. If the old lady told you the alternator was bad, have it checked at autozone or advanced auto parts for free.

BodybyFisher
Have you taken the positive cable apart and cleaned it well? The alternator would not cause this Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

BodybyFisher
Yes i did..... Then if you have cleaned the cable connections, there is a starter relay, check that, then I would imagine that you are having a bad solenoid on your starter Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
adallak
VERY CAREFULLY run a jumper from battery positive terminal to starter's positive through the intake manifold. Again...be VERY careful, do not touch any metal parts. See if it helps. I made a permanent jumper like that and drove for years, until I replaced the starter eventually. EDIT: Disregrad this post. Yours is not 4.9 engine, so the starter is not easy to reach. The saddest thing in life is wasted talent
coolnesss
New batteries come with less than a full charge - and I have another car that sits a long time - I have the same situation with it - but driving it around at speed, thereby charging the battery to a full charge, resolves the problem. Also, the alternator belt may not be tight enough.
