Jims_97_ETC,

Thanks for the Sat map. That is way cool.

Coming S out of town, the PAVED road is GRAY. Where it gets LIGHTER, is where it turns to gravel. Where it gets GRAY again is the cattle guard.

Then the fun started. :D

I am looking forward to it. I will buy Bar-B-Que for you and JimD.

We are on the way back home. Went to the Cumberland Gap National Park this morning. It is at the corner of Virginia, Kentucky and Tennessee.

Left there about 10:30AM. Was in Little Rock Arkansas at 7:30PM but I gained an hour coming into the Central time zone.

Would have been sooner but got caught in BAD traffic in Memphis.

My MS MapPoint has that as 605 miles in 9 hours that is an average speed with P stops of 67.22 (with BAD traffic!). You're slipping Jim...

Jim was kind enough to send us his IN CAR video for us to enjoy, he calls it, This is the way we roll in Texas!. :D You will notice that Jim is safety conscious donning the crash helmet and fire suit!

It was an easy day for he and is wife! Kudos to his wife for the great in car shots! What a trooper! You have to tell us how she got the photos of the front wheel! Notice the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance! As you can see, it was a sight-seeing day for Jim and his wife, tomorrow he plans to open it up!:lol:

Lane,

Thanks for the kind words. Did you get your Cat fixed?

Jim, I have replaced, the exhaust pipe area, where my catalytic converter

was stolen from me, with flex pipe and it is on the road again, but not what I would call fixed yet ...

the next two steps, are to drive to a muffler shop and replace where the cat converter was

with real pipe, instead of the flex pipe and to try to figure out ... how to simulate the cat. conv. O 2 sensors ...

when I get done, it should run better than before the theft ...

Jim, see the below links and any input guys would be, much welcomed ...

needed values would be nice ...

I reckon I will make a final update to the trip log.

I forgot to mention... last Tuesday as we were on our way from Tennessee to S. Carolina.... along I-85 between the Georgia line to close to Greenville S. Carolina, for about 60 or 70 miles, we had RED, WHITE and BLUE Cadillacs running along together.

A 2008 Dark Red CTS leading the way. My White DTS in the middle, and a Dark Blue STS, bringing up the rear. We were all running along togther in that order.

I thought it was interesting ... coming up to the Fourth of July holiday, because, just a few minutes before we got together with the other two Cadillacs, Darling Wife and I, had made a quick pit stop.

Darling Wife had picked up a couple of Apple fried pies, and I had got a hot dog. Of course we were drinking a COKE.

So there we were... driving a fine GM automobile... eating apple pies, hot doge and drinking Coke... with RED, WHITE AND BLUE Cadillacs running down the interstate, coming up on the Fourth Of July.

Can't get much more AMERICAN than THAT. :D:D:D

Does anyone have any advice on how to RELAX and TAKE IT EASY?

I have a major problem doing THAT.

I try to cover too much distance and cram too much driving into each day.

I know vacations should be more relaxing than mine usually are. :D Any advice welcome. :D

Left Little Rock Arkansas early Friday and arrived home about 2 PM or so. Was only a little over 300 miles.

Total mileage for the trip.... almost 3,400 miles.

Fuel mileage varied from a low of 21.5 to a high of almost 24.

Only got stopped once for speeding. (Dallas County sheriff, 15 minutes from home.)

Got VERY LUCKY and did not get a ticket. (I admit, I did deserve one.) 91 in a 65.

He was the nicest officer I have talked to in several years.

The DTS performed flawlessy. (As usual)

I had the oil changed a few weeks before the trip.

It is still at 57 percent.

Will change it when it gets to about 40 % or so and send a sample to Blackstone Labs.

WIll report back with oil analysis.

I know, I should let it get to a lower number than that, but it is SO HARD for me to do that. :D

I have been brainwashed by the oil companies. I can't help it. :D

At least I run it for 5000 miles or more between changes instead of 3000 like I used to do. :D

I did let it get down to 28% one time, mainly because I was working so many hours, that I went to work before the dealer opened and I got home after they closed. :D That was almost 9000 miles.

Some people relax at high speed is all Jim. I do find the Watercolor Jazz channel on XM relaxing, but mostly because it makes great background music for thinking. The fact that you recognized and appreciated the red white blue Cadillac parade sounds to me as if you were relaxed enough.

Remember, by 'holding out' til at least 25% oil usage you are helping to save the environment. Although as long as the oil is recycled then little is lost in changing earlier I suppose, except it lightens your wallet. Speaking of which, we turn oil in to BE recycled but I never see 'recycled' oil on the shelf or mentioned as part of a product. Maybe it does off to other industrial uses though.

http://www.recycleoil.org notes:

There are many practical uses for used motor oil. A primary use is to rerefine it into a base stock for lubricating oil. This process is very similar to the refining of crude oil. The result is that the rerefined oil is of as high a quality as a virgin oil product. In fact, rerefining used oil takes from 50 to 85 percent less energy than refining crude oil.

A secondary use of the used oil is to burn it for energy. Large industrial boilers can efficiently burn the used oil with minimum pollution. As a result some used oil is sent to power plants or cement kilns to be burned as fuel. On a smaller scale small quantities of used oil are burned in specially designed heaters to provide space heating for small businesses.

Bruce,

I do sometimes listen to Watercolors. I kinda like it for a change.

I have recycled my used oil for close to 45 years.

Heck, I even did it before recycling was cool. :D:D

It used to be kinda hard to find anyplace to take old used oil.

Back when I ALWAYS changed my OWN oil, I would take the old oil back to a place the recycled it.

At one time (for a few years) I owned two dump trucks, a pickup and a car.

I went thru a LOT of oil. I bought oil in five gallon cans. (Deposit required on the cans) Usually bought three or four cans at a time and bought filters by the case.

I had a couple of five gallon cans that I put the used oil in. When they got close to full, (which didn't take long), I would take them to the recycling place and empty them.

I think I read somewhere that the TXI cement plant in Midlothian uses old oil and old tires for fuel.

As for finding recylced oil for sale.... I remember YEARS and YEARS AGO, SOME service stations DID sell recycled oil. Like you, I have not seen any for sale in a long time.

There used to be a refinery in Fort Worth, on 28th street, just off of what is now I-35, just a few miles n of downtown. I think it was owned by the Premier Oil Company.

The recycled oil that was for sale back then, was usually in cheap paper cans, or sometime in quart glass jars, with a metal pour spout affixed to the top of the jar. It was about half price or less vs the NAME BRAND oils. I remember it as being about 15 or 20 cents a quart. May be wrong about that price.

Thanks for the old memories... hadn't thought of that old stuff for a long time.

Back then I was running around in flathead Fords and Mercurys mixed in with a few old six cylinder Chevys and old V8 Buick Century's with Dynaflow transmissions and KNEE ACTION front suspension. :D:D:D Them old Buicks would RUN. :D

The Red, White and Blue Cadillac formation must have been pretty cool, I wish I could have seen that. Too bad you couldnt have gotten a photo of all three. I wonder if they were aware of the colors and that THEY were in formation? I would imagine that you guys drove pretty hard? or was it a leisurely trip?

It sounds to me like you do relax and enjoy yourself, your wife is with you and enjoying it, you are driving a great car, a car that one day might not be produced, and you are on the open road. I get a feeling that you would not be happy sitting on the beach in the Caribbean. But I can say this, you might enjoy going to Bermuda, staying at the Southhampton Princess, renting motor scooters and exploring the island, now I could see you doing that... Its paradise, just wear your Cadillac visor... :P (Regis sent me this visor)

Paul T,

The little story about the road where I couldn't go any farther, was just a few minutes before I crossed over into West Virginia.

We went up I-77 to BECKLEY W Virginia....

Turned west there and followed Hwy 3 (runs alongside the Coal River) over to Danville. That was a real nice scenic drive. Good road, not much traffic, pretty scenery.

Picked up hwy 119/23 S to Williamson, then on S thru the eastern end of Kentucky, back into the western end of Virginia.

Turned west at Big Stone Gap in Virginia and spent the night at Middlesboro Kentucky.

Thats at Cumberland Gap National Park.

Went to the park the next morning, then started easing back towards Texas.

Sorry that I missed meeting you.

There will be a next time, and I won't be in such a hurry. :D

Yep, the Cadillac formation WAS pretty cool. Even Darling Wife appreciated it. :D We talked about the old Chevy commercial.... baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet.

She was eating apple pie, I was eating a hot dog and we were driving A Cadillac instead of a Chevy, but it was still kinda cool. :D I do hope the other Cadillac realized how we were in formation like that.

The problem I have... I try to cram too much into each day... then have to drive pretty hard to do it all. I need to somehow re-program my brain, that 70 MPH is "OK". That I DO NOT have to drive 85/90. If I could SOMEHOW do THAT.. I think I might enjoy it even more. And I could turn off the radar detector and MAYBE get a little better fuel mileage. :D Most of this trip time I got 22/23 mpg.

We do enjoy ourselves a LOT , by taking road trips.

We try to appreciate that, this is one of the few countries in the ENTIRE WORLD, where you CAN do that. Just jump in the car and GO till you get tired or the money runs out.... whichever comes first. :D

We cruise along for hours on end in a nice Cadillac... no REAL destination... just looking at the scenery...talking about it... maybe listening to the XM radio.

Very nice, BUT... I think that if I could just SLOW DOWN sometimes, it would be even better. :D

I have thought about the BIG CAR thing you mentioned. We REALLY like our Cadillac. Big, comfortable, powerful and handles VERY VERY GOOD for a two and a half ton car. We have had Cadillacs for most of the time since 1980. Almost 30 YEARS. I think that this one had the best combination of EVERYTHING that Cadillac has every had. Some of the others we have had were BIGGER, and had a smoother ride, but couldn't turn a corner unless you were going real slow. This one can do it all. The handling is amazing.

Looks like soon, there will be no more of them or if there is, only the rich can afford them.

We have talked about taking a cruise... but we don't care for gambling and don't drink, so I am not sure what else there is to do on a cruise.... except just look at the ocean go by. That don't sound like much fun to me.

The Bermuda idea sounds pretty good. Do the scooters have double seats? She couldn't drive one by herself. We would have to ride double. :D:D

Here is the biggest scooter shop on the island http://www.oleandercycles.bm/

Yes they do have scooters for two. Keep in mind that they drive on the left side of the road. I have been there about 4 times, if you have never been there before, you will love it. You can venture out in all directions and there is so much to see, you can get lost like you did in West Virginia easily. The motor bikes while intimidating because of the left hand drive are a terrific way to venture out and see beautiful scenery, sights and history. Each end of the island has its things to see.

It is not a cheap vacation, Bermuda is expensive, get a package at one of the hotels ( I have stayed in these hotels, Southhampton Princess, Sonesta, The Reefs and Inveruri (out of business) but many of the bed and breakfasts are nice.

Texas Jim,

Sorry I have been away from the forum a while and did not see your reply until today. I just came through Texas last week on I-40 on a 5000 mile 2 week vacation to Yellowstone then Grand Canyon and back. How far were you from I-40? It is very dry out there this year.

Paul T,

It is 350 miles to I-40 in Amarillo TX.

It is about 220 to I40 in Oklahoma City.

Yes, it is very dry and very HOT.

For the last couple of weeks, we have not had a day that didn't get to 100+.

Most days were 102 to 105 with heat indexes of 105 to 110.

Thats pretty warm.... even for Texas. :D

The weatherman says more of the same for the next couple of weeks. At least.
