1980 fleetwood brougham - Part 2!

So, my first post about this car was in regards to what problems i may encounter, as it had been sitting for 12 years.

I would like to say that the motor is PERFECT, and i only needed to replace the fuel filter, choke, and gasket on the Carb.

No leaks, no vacuum leaks, no overheating, stalling, When i got it, it did not start, now runs better then my daily driver <_<

Tranny works wonderfully (need to replace the uv joint at the back axle), and exhaust system without holes.

I still have to do a brake job, and replace fuel lines/fuses, and some body work, but my question now is in regards to an electrical issue i just cant figure out.

START HERE IF YOU DONT CARE :)

The interior door lights do not turn off. Ever. I think that may have been what my grandpa had been trying to track down before he got distracted by other projects.

If i press in the door switches (that engage when the door is shut) they turn off, and turn back on. Same as if i shut a door.

Does not matter if interiors are set to on or not, they stay on all the time.

Anyone got some troubleshooting advice?

Only one door? The problem seems to be mechanical. Probably the switch actuator should be pushed with the door a bit farther. I would put a few layers of an electrical tape on the door where it hits the switch.

The saddest thing in life is wasted talent

Because you said SWITCHES it is sounding like this happens with every door, is that correct? I am not sure where the interior lights relay is in your car but I would have someone push the door switch and listen for a relay cycling. If you hear a relay cycle, identify it and start from there.

If I am understanding correctly... if you push the door switch BY HAND, the lights turn off.. if you close the door, they DO NOT go off.

If this is correct... the switch does not have sufficent travel. Is there any kind of adjustment you could make to it?

Jim, this is what he said "If i press in the door switches (that engage when the door is shut) they turn off, and turn back on". I don't think its a travel thing, he saids if he physically pushes the it they turn off and then turn back on. If it happens with all the switches, THAT IS ODD, unless the interior light relay (assuming it has one) is engaged.

Sorry, i moved, didnt have internet for a bit, thanks for replys!

Ill clarify:

If i push the door switches in (on all doors) the interior lights go out, but then come back on...maybe after 5 seconds, while holding the switch in.

If i have a door open (Any door) and shut it, same thing.

Going over with a wiring diagram tommorow, cause this is weird.

Also, new update: Got wipers unsiezed, motor works but bars were jammed.

Problem is...they dont turn off...

This is fun!

I'm thinking BBF is on the right track with relay problems.

Find the relay center and pull the ones related to accessories. The wipers and and lights will probably go off.

Figure out which ones control what and swap in a known good relay.

Report back.

Relay's it was!

Replaced them, wipers/lights functioning correctly.

(unrelated: locking hubcaps are a jerk when they havent been moved in 13 years)
