bschelle
The red battery light is on and it is not charging. Is it the alternator or something else. Battery terminals are clean and the belt is fine. What do you think? Also, any shortcuts to changing the alternator. After 155,000 it probably is the alternator! KHE
B1911 is the Generator L circuit code. I would remove the alternator and take it to a ACDelco rebuilder in your area. They can repair the existing alternator for much less money than a chain store reman unit. bschelle
I don't have a rebuilder around here. I am going to get one from NAPA. Thanks for the reply!

I am surprised - most areas have such a rebuilder that handles starters and alternators. There is one in a small town of about 3900 people about 15 minutes from my home. Do a search in the forum on alternators and read up - there have been issues with aftermarket/chain store rebuilds. BodybyFisher
I don't have a rebuilder around here. I am going to get one from NAPA. Thanks for the reply! check rock auto and gmotors for prices, I would NEVER buy one from a chain, even one as good as NAPA, not to mention that the aftermarket alternators have been having problems, not unlike the problem you are having. The alternator is too hard to get out to change over and over it because you get a lifetime warranty, just get a rebuilt AC Delco and be done with it. Ranger
I don't have a rebuilder around here. I am going to get one from NAPA. Thanks for the reply! There is one in McHenry. When the starter on my wifes '96 Bonneville started screeching I took in in there. $20 and about :30 min. and I was on my way with a new clutch installed. I did kind of have to beg to have it done while I waited though. Might be worth looking into.
bschelle
No jump starts! Thanks Ranger, but I went with the NAPA. I was a NAPA jobber for 28 years and I kind of have some insight on their products. I sold a ton of their Rayloc REMANUFACTURED alternators, starters etc. I only had a big problem once with their starters when they used too heavy a grease on the front bushing and it caused trouble in the winter. Other than that they are a great reman. supplier. It took me about 3 hours to R&R. $130 exchange. Not too hard of a job but I know I couldn't make book! Now I hear a noise coming from the belt tensioner. Next on my list!
