Logan
I would normally not tackle this job in mid December. But lately the temperture has been hitting 65-70 degrees. Perfect weather for this job. Problem: Shorted TCC solenoid causing po1860. Po1860 creates Po741. Figure 12 solid hours to do the job. 13 with burping the coolant and trans fluid etc. Plus I spent time taking pictures etc. Not a job for the weak at heart. Very involved. But either I can do it...or pay Cadillac $1200 to do it. So technically I am paying myself $100 per hour. Double check your work the next day. Even I missed a hose clamp. The 'rod' system worked great. Would even be faster if you use 2 jacks. Jack up one side a little bit. Spin loosen the nuts 1-2 inches by hand. Lower jack. Go repeat other side. Back and forth. Rack has to come down 8 inches. Tips: The cam sensor on the passenger side head should be removed. It has a bracket to protect it engine going in...but not out. One 10mm screw to remove. Post O2 sensor exhaust heat shield. Manual has you drill out riviots...and remove shield. Simply use tin snips and cut a slot. Bend part of the shield away. Then bend back when done. Save 1 hour there. Driver side engine mount has to come out. Mess with this after the rack is lowered. There are no 'wet' bolts on the side cover. So all the bolts have to be loosened slightly to get the side pan to leak in a controlled way. Have the pan 'leaking' as you drop the cradle. Fluid loss is just under 4 quarts for side pan removal. BodybyFisher
This statement makes me nervous "Not for the weak at heart". Can you elaborate on that? I am thrilled that the bolt method works! Fantastic! I was sweating using an engine hoist, removing the hood, etc... UGH.... Did you see the ISS sensor in the area? Do you think you had clearance to do the HVAC housing at 8 inches? Great job and thanks for testing your innovation! "Weak at heart." It is a big job. And I was just doing the side cover. To get to the ISS....the axle has to come out...and the next big chunk of trans has to come out. If I had to do a ISS. I might consider sending the work out to a trans shop. But then again....If you want the job done right........ Logan
"Can you do the job yourself? I would say that if you just own a basic set of tools and just do things like change your oil and plugs, you should probably stay away from it, if you are not afraid to tackle an engine overhaul yourself I would say that you should be able to do this job as well." Ray ISS post nailed it. It can be done. But you better be pretty good at wrenching and details. Problem: Post O2 sensor heat shield. As the engine is dropped...the exhaust pipe will drop with it. The aft rear O2 sensor will run into the heat shield. Service manual has you drill out the riviots...and remove the heat shield. Here is a picture of the post O2 sensor heat shield trick. Simply cut a slot...bend for clearance...then bend back when done. You can see one of the 'pink' riviots that the service manual has you drill out.
