98 STS sending unit

Recommended Posts

I need to replace my sending unit on the STS.

I could not help but laugh when I found out I need to remove my trunk to get to it.

I have never heard of this before, and think it's kind of funny.

when you say remove your trunk do you mean remove an access panel to get to the fuel pump? If you have the access panel you are lucky you have that access panel, I need to drop the fuel tank to accomplish the same task... I wish I had that panel..

Someone want to confirm that the 98 has an access panel?

I'm going to climb out the limb and assume you are speaking of the fuel level sending unit.

Would you rather drop the fuel tank to remove the pump assembly OR would you be happy lifting some carpet and undo an access cover designed to allow you to remove the fuel pump assembly without dropping the tank? ?

Sending unit removal, remove trunk!

Step 1) light up cutting torch!

Warning do not get flame near fuel tank or lines

My sender is all over the place one time I start up and have 9 gallons the next I have 4..... darn I want an access panel, I'd change that pump/sender pronto! ANOTHER reason to buy a 98!

ANOTHER reason to buy a 98!

Or, cut an access panel in your trunk.

Hmmm you think that's possible?

Why not? All you have to do it correctly locate the pump and cut an access hole large enough to get your hands in there with a tool to unluck the tabs. Then reinforce the opening with a doubler ring. And finally, fabricate a cover that overlaps about 1" all around the opening. Four screws to hold the cover down and you are done :D .

Or, you could trade for a '98 to '04 Seville or '00 to '05 Deville.

I was going to suggest that. Certainly seems doable to me. probably a lot easier as well, but I'd use something other than a cutting torch.

You know what would be funny,

Start a service where you add access panels for the fuel pump and sender..

Price it 20% less than the labor on dropping the tank

That would be hillarious,

Making hundreds of dollars cutting a hole and installing a cute funny "custom made grommet seal"...

Hehehehe

Heeee heeeee heeeeeeeeeeeeeee hooooooooooooo ! HEH!

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL

Are you ready for some football?????????????????????????????

An old married couple no sooner hit the pillows when the old man passes gas

and says...."seven points".

His wife rolls over and says, "What in the world was that?"

The old man replied, "It's fart football."

A few minutes later his wife lets one go and says "Touchdown, tie score."

After about five minutes the old man lets another one go and says, "Aha.

I'm ahead 14 to 7".

Not to be outdone the wife rips out another one and says, "Touchdown, Tie

score."

Five seconds go by and she lets out a little squeaker and says, "Field Goal

I lead 17 to 14."

Now the pressure is on the old man. He refuses to get beaten by a woman, so

he strains real hard. Since defeat is totally unacceptable, he gives it

everything he's got, and accidentally craps in the bed.

The wife says, "What the hell was that?"

The old man says, "Half time, switch sides...............

Lookin here on Si tomcat, it pretty much shows more than just an access panel. It looks almost like 70% of the trunck floor.

I think it is a great idea, and would never of known if I didn't have this program.

Although I imagine somoene on here would of told me if I didn't know?

It may be but without knowing the clearance between the trunk pan and the tank, it could be dangerous. Also, sealing up the cutout may be difficult. Dropping the tank is not that bad of a job if the tank is empty. Granted, I'd rather have the access panel in the trunk but it isn't too bad of a job.

I have never dropped a tank but as you say, I don't believe it could be too difficult. I would use a sheet of plywood under the tank after having run the fuel level down to between E and 3... I think a floor jack centered on the tank should let it down easily. I would put the car on 4 jack stands.

It is very annoying for me to have to deal with this fuel level issue right now, but I have bigger fish to fry with P0717/ISS sensor right now. I think I would need to fix the fuel sender issue to sell the car. I think that the fuel level sensor is available as a separate component.. If it is, I might consider replacing just the level sensor since I am getting rid of the car as soon as possible. Thanks

Hi,

After the third fuel pump with two dieing on the road, I cut an access panel on my 97 GMC for the next one. But I never let the tank go below 1/4 tank any more either, and have a new pump in a box in the tool box. The tool box also hides the nicely paunted cover on the access hole. I made the cover from a larger piece cut from a wreck at the local pick and pull yard.

BTW the early Range Rovers didn't have the access panel, but the dealers had a template available for the first time.
