BodybyFisher
Today I was near my favorite scrap yard and decided to stop in (Lakewood Autoparts in Lindenhurst, NY). I took a walk back to see what Cadillacs they had in, I knew they had a 96 Deville in a few weeks ago. Well I made a big score today. I picked up the bottom half of my air filter box (my clip catch was broken allowing a poor seal), and a COMPASS DIMMING mirror for $25.00 total! YEAH! I just got done calibrating the mirror and it works terrific! If you have scrap yards near you, it pays to visit once in a while. My yard had 1996, 1998 and 2002 Devilles and a few Sevilles. I am going back next week to pick up a few seat motors.... PAUL T
I used to frequent our local Junk (Salvage in the Midwest) yard and got some great buys. Great bucket seats for $50.00 a pair and numerous other things too many to count. It closed down a few years back and I have not found one close enough that would just allow me to browes. I miss that. When we would go out to Missouri to visit friends, my father-in-law and I would go junk yard shopping while the women went Mall hopping. We would be in hog heaven where ever we went whether it was cars or RV's. When I pass a junkyard my heart flutters to think of all the little treasures that might be in there. It is making me excited just to think about it.
epricedright
What's the trick to getting good deals at the junk yard? Do you need to look like a grease ball or what? Every time I go, they charge outrageos prices for everything. Maybe I'm going to the wrong ones? Unfortunately, there are none close to where I live. I have developed a relationship with one of the guys at my yard. As you know I have shipped engines and engine parts to Amsterdam, Germany and North Jersey from this yard. The staff there affectionately refers to me as Cadillac Mike, (I like it)..... Because of my relationship, I got the air filter box and compass rear view mirror for $25 total, an AMAZING price and I doubt that a stranger off the street could get it..... The mirror alone goes for $50 to $150 on car-parts.com All I can say is develop a relationship and let them get to know you...it may help to send an engine to Amsterdam  Mike Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

Every time I go, they charge outrageos prices for everything. Maybe I'm going to the wrong ones? Unfortunately, there are none close to where I live. Around here, it varies from yard to yard. Some are pretty laid back - others very uptight. I know and stay away from the uptight ones. I have the best luck with yards that don't mind if you wander around. Then just try to relate to the guys. City-Slickers usually wind-up paying a premium for everything. I always wear my grubbies, bring my own tools, and try not to tell them what I'm looking for. If I find what I'm after, I pull it, carry it up to the counter and say "whatcha get on this?" Never, ever let them know that your everything hinges on leaving there with The Thing. As BBF said, its mostly in the relationship. I guess it helps that I grew up working in a gas station and in parts at the Buick dealer.
JasonA
I once bought an Olds 403 engine from a yard I used to frequent in Virginia. After you buy something major from them, you're pretty much a celebrity there. You do have to build a relationship with them, show up often, and make nice with the folks there. epricedright
I haven't been to one in over a decade, but I do recall the last time I went, as soon as I pulled up, I thought to myelf, dam, I'm too clean and I'm wearing the wrong clothes - they're gonna think I'm some "city slicker", and sure enough, they quoted me a "city slicker" price! Needless to say, we didn't do business and I went and bought new for not much more than the price they quoted for used. I told myself that from then on, if I ever needed a junk yard part, I'd work on my car 1st in my raggedy clothes, get all greasy, don't clean up and then go there. Mike, would that compass mirror work on a DeVille that didn't have one originally, like mine?
epricedright
Who needs a junk yard with eBay? I just found a heated, auto-dimming driver side mirror I needed for $8.00 + $6.00 s/h. I hope it works. The caddy dealer online wanted something like $170 for it. eBay - the world's largest "Junk Yard"! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...05817607&rd

Epriced, I just did a search of your 94 owners manual and they did not offer a compass mirror in your year. The did offer a dimming mirror, does yours dim? It is possible that it could be wired in I would imagine, if you have the dimming type, you would have power up there and that would help. Mike Who needs a junk yard with eBay? epricedright
Yes, my mirror dims. If you ever run across another one of those, please let me know. I love having a compass in my car...they sure come in handy out of town! Our minivan has one on the overhead console. Did you send those tools yet? If you didn't, hold off on the half shaft tools, as my half shaft may not be slinging grease. I'm not sure though. I'm hoping I spilled some oil from my oil filter during my last oil change, although it sure looked and felt like grease. I cleaned it off, and want to drive it a few more days an see if any new oil/grease shows up. I looked at it a few miles after cleaning it, and there was no more grease. I couldn't find a hole or slit. I haven't heard any more popping noises either. I thought I heard a couple pops awhile back, but maybe it was something else. I can't blame you for grabbing those seat motors. Especially since they're giving you "monster deals"!
