BodybyFisher
The second time you do a job it usually takes half the time. Maybe it just seems that way? No question about that! KHE
I could easily do another one in far less than half the time - but....I need time for the scrapes to heal and the grease to work out of my fingers... KHE
Couldnt you just replace the block ? Michael- Why? That would be a huge expense. I used the oversized Bigserts and the current block is repaired. I reused the 6mm bolts. Thanks - I confirmed that the 6mm bolts are to be reused. I got the heads mounted and set the valve timing last night. I wanted to get it ready to drop into the car but ran out of time. Tonight, I'll install the waterpump crossover, lift hooks, balancer pulley, etc. and have it ready to install in the car. I won't be able to work on it much this weekend but Monday night, the engine will be back in the car - then the fun begins - hooking up all the brackets, etc. Kevin '93 Fleetwood Brougham '05 Deville '04 Deville 2013 Silverado Z71
BodybyFisher
Kevin, how did the head bolt torquing go? KHE
Kevin, how did the head bolt torquing go? It went fine - the Bigserts held up . That is the first time I've torqued bolts to an angular value and was very concerned about losing the torque sequence which would have been disasterous... the engine looks huge with the heads mounted - like a 472 or 500. The final prep work should be relatively easy - I need to locate a balancer pulley installer as well as fab up a waterpump pulley installer. BodybyFisher
Too bad I have a balancer/pulley installer I could have sent it if it would work for you.... joeb
when i was looking for my seville a friend let me try his lincoln MKVIII (1997?) I was suprised how wide that motor was. I wonder if the lincoln motors are any more reliable than the northstars for headgasket issues. my dad works partime at a machine shop and he says the ford tritons love to strip out sparkplug holes. mikeal1892
tritons =JUNK ! my dad has a ford expedtion and he has had more issues with that thing then anything hes ever owned. Well I have to give it props if its a 4.6 ltr that engine has been around for years its very good. I have owned 2 town cars and 5 cadillacs....lol I tend to think the 4.6 in terms of being reliable that it is but its not got any power compared to the northstar. Ehhh theres just something about a cadillac.. Michael-
zonie77
The new head bolts can be loosened and retorqued several times without a problem, as long as they aren't heat cycled. I just read that the factory does that when they assemble new engines. It gives a more consistent torque setting. On one of the one's I did we got messed up and weren't sure where we were (my brother's car). Bbob gave me the info on removing and reinstalling them. KHE
That's good to know. I told my wife that I was not to be disturbed under ANY circumstances when I torqued the heads down..... I picked up a harmonic balancer installer tool from Advance Auto Parts loan a tool probram on the way home from work. The instructions don't cover the installation tool - only the removal....I checked the shop manual and it says to use the balancer bolt to pull on the pulley. I seem to remember that was not recommended but the more I think about it the more I think the installation tool applies to the 4.9 engine and not the Northstar. I'm going to install the water pump crossover, cam covers, balancer and all the misc. brackets/lift hooks in preparation for the installation of the engine. KHE
The engine is in the car - I am struggling to align it up with the trans - there is not much room and it needs to go down another 3-4". I think there is a bracket interfering somewhere but I ran out of time last night. zonie77
It is big, and that's the biggest drawback if you don't have a lot of room. Luckily I have a bigger than average garage. No lift yet. We did my brother's in his back yard (the pics on the other site) on some concrete he has. If you have even a little room I think it is significantly easier...scary but easier. KHE
I reached a milestone last night - the engine is in the car and bolted to the transmission! The front motor mount was keeping it from lining up so I removed it. I then was able to get one of the four bolts started and rocked the engine and then was able to install the three remaining bolts and torque them down. I will install the rubber mount tonight but it shouldn't be a big deal. Once I install the coolant crossover pipes, the rest of the job should be fairly straightforward. I hope to start it up Saturday depending on how much progress I make in the next two evenings.
