Fuel pump ?

The pump should be down inside that container, for lack of a better word. That unit looks like the entire pump & sending unit. Last time I did one (not on a Caddy) the pump was servicable seperately. It was just removed from the sending unit and a new on was plugged on. On the one I did, the sending unit cost as much as the pump.

Now that we are on that discussion, I have been getting very eratic fuel level readings, sending unit? And do I dare replace the sending unit without the pump?

I'd replace both of them while I had it apart, so as to not worry about it 6 months from now.

I am pretty sure you can remove it from the top. Once you remove the access panel you will see......but pretty sure that you can.

Thanks, I have to look to see if I have an access panel also.. That would be nice

"you can change through the spare tire area without dropping tank."

Are you sure about this...I thought I had to drop the tank on a 1998 deville d'elegance...

There is not an access panel through the trunk on the '98 Deville - you will need to drop the tank. I believe the 2000+ devilles and 98+ Sevilles have the access panel.

Do I have to pump out all the gas from my tank? I got a full tank.

Only if you have to drop the tank. You need to do it for weight reduction. If you can access yours through the trunk, then there should be no need to drain.

Regarding the fuel pump, at least on my 94, the pump and sending unit came as a single unit (AC Delco) and fully assembled. Some after market brands listed the pump and sending unit seperately, however, some knowledgeable people informed me that the two parts should always be done together. Kind of like having 2 bald front tires but swapping only 1 for a new one. Once again this information is relevant to my 94 and may not apply to later years.

On the fuel filter...Does that plastic retainer clip around the old filter have to be used?

Yes

So how can i take off the clip around the old fuel pump? Or is it something I can buy at the auto parts store
