mikeal1892
has anyone ever noticed on autotrader.com all the devilles that have engine problems ? 1997-99 what is this issue that causes them to go bad ? for the love of the car i wouldnt mind trying to fix one for something to do. i've just always wondered what it could be. ive mainly seen it out of the 1997's which was only the second year after the northstar went in the standard deville. just wondering if anyone else ever noticed this .. michael s

PAUL T
yes fair cheap between 1.500 and 3,000 mainly . there out there ! i just wonder what causes them to go bad. michael s I would say that neglect by the owner would probably play a big role. Not enough WOT's, failure to change oil, check transmission fluid and coolant, and of course age of vehicle. A 1997 vehicle will soon be 10 years old. mikeal1892
true ive noticed this over the course of the last few years and i was just wondering if it was something to do with the first few years of the engine michael
Ranger
I doubt it. The Northstar has been around for a long time. Shouldn't make any difference what car you put it in. I suspect most of them are head gasket problems and I would also guess from neglect.
mikeal1892
kinda what i was thing. and i believe the engine and the trans has to come out inorder to do that job. michael
PAUL T
true ive noticed this over the course of the last few years and i was just wondering if it was something to do with the first few years of the engine michael The Northstar engine had been in Deville's since 1994 starting with the Concours, then it became the only engine in 1996 & up. I would say that 98 & 99 Deville Northstar engines should be the best for that body style. I am sure though there are some with problems. Compared to the ones you are noticing there are probably hundreds of thousands out there with no problems.

KHE
there out there ! Just because you might have found one or two that had engine problems does not mean there is a chronic issue with that type of car or year range. For every "problem" car that you find on the internet, there are tens of thousands driving around that do not have any problems at all. Come on, do you really think all 97-99 Devilles have engine problems??? Cadillac produced close to 250,000 Devilles in that time period and if there was something wrong, there would have been a recall.... mikeal1892
no i do not think theres issues with everyone of them, but i have seen a great deal of them out there. i use to have a postion where it was my job to buy cars for a local dealership. i've seen so many that i do wonder if it could be a chronic issue. and it really was at the beging of time when the northstar enegine was mass produced. it was only on select models until 1996 then with the body change in 1997 i seen these issues. sorry to try to make an interesting conversation. michael
mhinchley
Well I have seen some.............but not just with Devilles..............with many cars (Grand Prix is another I see head gasket problems on alot of, for example). With the Northstar, I would bet 90% are headgaskets from the coolant not being maintained. That is not an engine flaw though, but an owner flaw. People think you can drive a car forever without changing the coolant, and in some cars you can................not in these. So they burn themselves. Then they put them up for sale, because they don't want to pay for that high-cost repair fix. That is my thought anyway. Other cars (Volvo, Mitsubishi and some Toyotas come to mind, among others) still have timing belt issues............and if they are not changed when recommended............it is catastrophic engine failure for the tight tolerance motors. And I see many of them too with damaged valves/pistons, etc for sale.

For $1,000 I was thinking about towing it from Charlotte Do I sense a road trip in the very near future?? The rest of the STS looks to be in great shape ... even the driver's seat and shifter handle look good, plus the bonus of chrome rims, which are worth at least $700. winterset
To make things worse, it might have been a "restored" flood car from LA, that later also blew a head gasket.
