Caddy is at the mechanic

Recommended Posts

For a few weeks now I've been hearing a strange, hollow whining sound from under the hood. Louder when the engine is cold, but always there.

Finally took it to the mechanic, he said the water pump is leaking.

It's there now being repaired.

New pump, new belt and possibly a new pulley tensioner will be installed.

What do you guys think this entire mess should end up costing me, assuming a new pulley tensioner is also installed? :(

If you really want to make people safe drivers again then simply remove all the safety features from cars. No more seat belts, ABS brakes, traction control, air bags or stability control. No more anything. You'll see how quickly people will slow down and once again learn to drive like "normal" humans.

It's a 4.9L right? I think that's relatively time-consuming, but maybe not. I'd figure a few hundred in parts and a few hundred in labor, assuming they do a pump, belt, and tensioner. Maybe $300-500?

Sounds about right. Stay tuned.

New Water Pump is about $100 at Napa, they will charge about $150 (as they get it cheaper than we can buy it), tensioner is about $50 they will charge $75, and about $40 for the belt. Two hours labor at $75.

$150+75+40+150 about $415? Just a guess...

P.S., the car only has 74,900 miles :(

The puley and the belt are still most likely fine at 75.000 miles... New ACDElco pump with gasket is $127.62 at gmpartsdirect. com. The labor probably $100.

Now the mechanic calls me and tells me that as the car was being driven into the bay, the transmission was slipping. I knew about this problem and told him that it had to be warmed up before being driven. He's going to add a "conditioner" to the transmission fluid. What next?????

Tell him to leave it alone and to just check the fluid. It's cold and you have complained about your car in the cold, low fluid level will make it worse. The mileage on the tensioner is NOT what concerns me its the age, no matter if the car is moving or not the spring pressure is ON... and the grease in the bearings age, and have to put up with temp extremes..

I am not surprised, the tensioner is about $50 from gmotors, so your mechanic has to make their VIG on it... forgot about the anti-freeze... The pump was what I expected, labor was as expected also.. I missed my calling, they made money on the pump, the tensioner, the belt and the labor... Marika, nexttime you drive out to Long Island and we:

Buy new pump for $75, New Tensioner for $50, Belt $40, AntiFreeze $10, lunch for the mechanic $25, tolls $15, gas $15, tip for excellent mechanic $25 and you still save $262.28!

It's the age that's getting you here. That water pump, if original, is almost 15 years old. That's quite a while for the pump seal to last. I'd say that's a good service life.

Jason,

My car is one year older and has 148.000 miles on the clock. Original water pump and tensioner. I replaced the belt "just in case". It would serve more.

Marika,

You should not have hard time ordering parts on-line. Save on parts at least. The tensioner has a mark to evaluate the tension of the belt. If you are within the range and it moves freely, leave the belt and tensioner alone for a while.

I do have two questions:

1) When the pump is removed obviously antifreeze is lost. I know the mechanic replaced some antifreeze. Do I need to add that stuff to the antifreeze to help avoid head gasket and other leaks? I don't think the mechanic did so.

2) I noticed this morning that there was not as much heat in the car as before. Is there such a thing as a pump being too efficient, if this is the right question?

If he did not put the cooling supplement in I would put in 3 or 4 tablets crushed directly into the radiator on the 4.9.

It will take a day or so for the system to stabilize, meaning a warm up and cool down cycle for it to pull in coolant and expell air. Keep an eye on the coolant level for a day or so till this happens. When the coolant is low the heat will not be 100%.

Check the coolant level, it may need a little more or you may just have an air bubble in the system, a blast down the Highway will take care of that! I had to add more coolant after I did mine (not uncommon) or everything is okay and its in your head!

Wow, that's incredible service! I've never heard of a water pump lasting 150k miles! When I got my '84 Cutlass in 1995, I had to replace the water pump shortly thereafter, and the car only had 60k miles. I think it was the age that got it. Either that, or the silicated coolant had never been changed. :)

It is not as much age as it is sitting around drying out seals with low mileage. An old low mileage car is not as good of a deal when seals start leaking from sitting idle. Brake seals, transmission seals, rear main seals, gas varnishing, etc.. My wife has a 92 Deville with 74,000 miles, I keep telling her that she needs to drive it more often in order to keep the car in good running order. It sits so much that when she starts driving it something breaks down and I spend countless hours fixing it. She then loses confidence in it and it sits again. She did the samething to her 69 Corvette. She drove it and it quit on her, I scrapped the points off and was good to go, after that though she lost confidence in it and it has been sitting in our garage now for 6 years and needs a lot of work to get it running again.
