Hi everyone,

I am in search of a temporary replacement for my totalled '99 STS.

Going to look at a '97 Deville tonite....82,k $4300

Any thoughts about quirks for this car that I should be looking for?

I will be buying an STS in the future, but I need something now to keep

us all moving at my house...

Thanks in advance..

jim

Well, I don't think either the 97 or the Deville have anything quirky about them over and above any other. If you can get the records that would be great. I would want to know when the coolant was changed and how the car was maintained. By mileage, the coolant should have been changed twice now. Ask if green was ever used, if it was, now often was the coolant changed, hopefully every two years from that point on...

Check the codes, most salesman do not know about them and unless they unhooked the battery there might still be codes. I found a transmission problem up front that way once.

Take it to a highway and load it as much as possible to test head gaskets and tranny. It's a little bit underpriced if you ask me, be careful.

Jim,

With the engine cold, pull the radiator cap off and look for any gray gum or clay-like deposits - a possible sign of a failed head gasket. I agree with adallak - $4,300 with 82K miles is very cheap.

Take it out somewhere on a less travelled road, put it in second gear, run to about 40MPH and nail the gas pedal until it shifts to 3rd (hold onto that steering wheel!).

You will likely get some smoke out the tail pipe, but it should not last long and should become less noticable each time you do it. If not - be wary.

Get a feel for how the transmission shifts during this check (should be a firm shift to 3rd, not a slide) - and after you drive with the car in "D" using "normal" acceleration (should be much smoother shift). Park the car (running) and check the coolant temp and have a look at the overflow tube to check for coolant loss (don't open that coolant filler cap!!)- another sign that something may be wrong.

If you feel like it's a deal, take it to a trusted mechanic and let them have an unbiased look.

Keep us posted

Jeff

I agree with adallak and jhall - $4200 is cheap for a '97 with 82,000 on the odometer. In September, I looked at a '97 Sedan Deville that had 61,000 miles on it and the dealer was asking $7000. I know I could have bought it for $6200 even though $7000 was not out of line.

Thanks to all for the responses...

Owned since 10k miles by well off real estate sales lady.

She paid $28,682 seven years ago. She must be in her

sixties, but very spry...Her son bought her a new Pacifica....

SHE HATES IT!. LOL

Had a 75 Honda with 75k and sold it. Intended to keep the Caddy as her

back up car. Problem is, garage too small. Cannot walk between the

two cars... (Wishes she had her old Honda again..)

I drove it last night. Ran well, no problems other than the gas pedal stuck

to the floor! I was in a 25 mph zone, had to shut it off and get the pedal loose...

I will be looking at it again this afternoon.

I was able to see all the reciepts from 2005.

New tires, diagnostics, new plugs, new wires, (carbon tracking).

All work since 10k has been done at the dealer.

I will contact dealer to get the last change on the antifreeze...

Was not able to get the codes! I don't know what I was doing wrong!

I pressed the off and warmer ^^ buttons. I re-read the OBDII code

page from this web site, cannot seem to understand what buttons to press.

Any help there?

The car was immaculate inside and out. couldn't find an oil leak, even though

there was some oil on the driveway.. I will look again today in the daylight.

Will look in the overfill bucket to determine what shape the antifreeze / headgaskets

are in.

No key fob with the keys. Would all DeVilles have the option of having a key fob

to open the doors? Can I get one to match?

The price sure seems right. Lady is believeable. The car looks great.

No sun roof, No heated seats. No Stabilitrac. Bummer.

Thanks to all!

I'll let you know!

By '97 the key fobs were standard I think. Sounds like a good bargin.

Hi everyone,

Well I am now the proud owner of a '97 DeVille!

Car Looked good.

Could not find any real problems.

So I said how about $4000?

She said, "I'm going on vacation Friday.

If you get it out of my driveway tonite, I'll take $4000."

I said you've got a deal...

So I bought it.

Now, I have a key fob from my totaled '99 STS.

Any chance I can program to a '97 DeVille???

or will I have to sell mine to get the right one on Ebay?

One on Ebay Says it will work from '96 thru '03!

Could this be correct? Can someone fill me in on what I will need

to track down a key fob?

thank you,

jim

Thanks!

To me the good luck with the STS is, my son was uninjured in the crash.

I will try programming the fob. Thanks for the links.
