HELP - Trans shaft came out with CV axle!

Hi guys,

Been a L O N G time.

Deville's have been running Ok - at least until today.

I am changing the axle shafts, brakes, rotors on my 2000 Deville.

Things were going OK until I pulled the driver side axle. This was stuck hard. I pulled the CV joint apart and left the inboard drive piece that is attached at the transmission. As I pulled this off (crowbar bump), the transmission shaft was stuck in the end of the CV axle piece and pulled about 5 inches.

When I noticed it, I stopped removal of the CV axle, and pushed it back it in by hand, placed some wood blocks behind the CV joint end and used a 3/4" steel bar through the center of the CV cup with a few hammer taps to re-seat the transmission shaft and loosen the CV end.

Should I be concerned that anything might have dropped loose inside the transmission? Since the shaft came out, is there a possibility that something is wrong with the transmission? I had it worked on some time back at the dealer (internal leak and would not go into high overdrive). Could they have goofed and not put a retainer clip back in?

Hi jhall, it has been a long time. I have never heard of this happening before and I am interested in seeing others reply on this, very odd indeed.

Hi BBF. Good to hear from you.

Well,

Bumped it back in and then grabbed the end with a pair of channel locks to see if I could pull it out. Looks like it seated back in the snap ring - at least I hope it did........

I've got the Helms manual from my old "96 deville that shows some of the 4T80E guts. A retainer ring is shown, but it does not state what type (i.e. snap in or e-clip type)

Put everything back and did a test drive. No grinding or unusual sounds, so I hope the differential assembly is similar to the axle designs on the old rear-wheel drive cars where a smack with a slide hammer would pop the axle out of the retainer ring (after you took the outer bearing plate bolts off).

This was an all-day deal. New rotors, pads, CV axles and bearings. Man I HATE the bearings. I've now replaced 6 of them between the 2000 and 2004 Devilles. Can do the swap in less than an hour. Seal dies, water / grit goes in and metal parts / pieces come out. I also wonder if the bearing is designed too close to it's load limit. Got the ones with the 3 year warranty. They look just like the one year warranty bearings. I'm guessing I'll be reinstalling a 'free' bearing in about 2 years unless I can sell the car first.

Got to say that I am not enthused about the 2000 - 2004 cars. I'm looking toward a used DHS or DTS that is a newer year.

P.S. - Hope you did OK in the storm. Got some friends on LI that took a bad hit. I know the problems all too well from a hurricane hit we had here in NC in '96. Took over a year to get things back to something we could call 'normal'.

JHall...

For what it may be worth...

My 2006 has the bearing built into the hub.

They are pretty easy to replace.

I recently replaced a hub/bearing on my 2006 DTS after a lady ran me up on an 8 inch tall curb.

A couple of weeks later it started making a faint noise, so I replaced it.

Now that I have done it once... I think I could replace the hub in a little over an hour.

Glad you figured it out, I was unaware that the shaft could be pulled out intentionally or not, I dont think we have seen that in the time we are here, maybe Logan has seen that.

Yes it was pretty bad here on LI, things are just starting to look normal, they just ended the ODD/EVEN gas rationing. At least I got a new generator as a result of it. I cant believe that 100 homes burned down in breezy point and fire island is without power. There are still curfews in Babylon and police are using night vision IR helicopters to stop looting.. Obama was here however and said he said he is standing behind us, so all is fine...leading from behind is such an effective stategy... :yupi3ti: .

Why is it whenever there is a bad storm/event, some people think looting is justified???

We had a tornado years ago near Raleigh that took out a K-Mart late at night and then a neigborhood behind it. Police arrested a few looters before the sun came up - while people were still trapped in the debris.

We did not have too many issues in our county after hurrican Fran. I guess the lower population density, being somewhat rural and having Smith and Wesson as close friends, reduced the potential for people wanting to risk their lives to pick up 'free' stuff. It was interesting that many, many people got to know each other more closely since the power and water were out (no TV, AC). It was reassuring to see that most wanted to help others.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi all,

Just wanted to make a follow-up post to advise the car has been driving well with no problems, so it would appear the shaft is held by a snap-type retainer.
