GM Tech 2 / Scantool questions

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I posted a while ago about a problem with the HVAC system on my 2001 Seville STS. Unfortunately I can't get it fixed. There are no related DTCs, it just blows too warm on the driver's side with the AC on, and too cold when I want warm air. On the passenger side all is fine.

Right now I'm thinking about buying a scantool, but I don't know what to buy.

I need a tool to move and calibrate the actuators, check the sun sensors and stuff like that.

Is there any tool from OTC or Snap-On that could do that ?

What about programming the PCM ? Or other modules ?

If I buy a GM Tech 2, like this one on ebay, Ebay-Link,

is everything I need included in that package ?

Can someonebody help ? Thanks.

That should cover it. You may find a cheaper Tech 2 without the Can module if you can confirm that you do not need it. My 08 DTS is not listed to require it but it was needed when we had it hooked up to the Tech 2. I wouldn't buy anything except for a Tech 2.

Ok, from what I've read on the net I can't do any programming with the Tech2 unless I'm connected to a specific website and spent like $2.000 each year ?

Same is true for software updates ?

And what about those "cheap" Kits from China like this one here ?

http://uobd2.com/wholesale/gm-tech2-gm-diagnostic-scanner-1407.html

I heard these Tech2 can't be updated and you can't do programming with them. But if I also can't do that with the original Tech2 unless I spent $2000, well then there's not much difference to me.

I thought about buying an Autel Maxidas DS708, http://www.auteltech.com/ds708.htm or Autoboss V30 http://www.auto-tool-shop.com/autoboss-v30-p-106.html

But who knows if those things can do all the stuff I need them to do. The big advantage would be that I could also use them on european cars, and that would be a good thing as I am in Germany.

As far as I am aware, you can change the settings for certain controls with the tech 2 without a subscription. You may need a subscription if you wish to install updates as they become available from GM. I doubt it but that is the only thing that I am aware of that you would need an external connection for. If you are wanting to change something that does not already have a setting option, you are pretty much out of luck. It would involve rewriting the firmware for the specific device.

I would not buy any Chinese counterfit Tech-2s... There have been numerous complaints that GM or Bosch has issued warnings about the counterfit units. See http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=27834

i dont think that bad

so long as know more and clear about the tool yourself before order online

no doubt that it's much cheaper

just dont ask the sell service for help

GM Tech2 quite pricy

i got this MaxiScan US703

so far so good

You don't think what is bad?, buying a counterfit tool that will fail or perform poorly?

The scanner you linked to is a one-way scanner and it does not do what the Tech 2 does

I was wondering about that too...

One more post like that and I will delete both of them.

I had suspected that it might be the case because of the english and when I looked at the link, but I don't like leaving mis/dis information hanging about
