drdata313
I have a 2007 CTS with the 3.6L engine and 26K miles. Recently, it started producing an odor of hot metal coming from underneath the car. The car runs fine, and there is no check engine indication. The smell is not that of overheated brakes, and there is no oil leak or any other indication. It is just the smell of hot metal, like something is overheated. Any thoughts as to how to diagnose this problem would be appreciated.
BodybyFisher
For the heck of it, the next time you take a long drive at night, and smell the smell, with it still idling, look under the car in a dark area and see if you see the exhaust pipe glowing red anywhere on the exhaust especially before the cat. In the daylight look to see if anything is melted onto your exhaust system, plastic bags, whatever Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Texas Jim
Yeah...What Body by Fisher said. My first thought was also a hot catalytic converter.

BodybyFisher
You know while I say that I think it could be the cat, at the same time, wouldn't that condition set a code? Hmm, maybe its not a clog, but rich, if there is a fuel pressure regulator or injector problem dumping fuel into the exhaust Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
CarlaValentine
My car is considerably older but my cat got to the point of glowing red hot without ever setting a code. It was due to a bad coil allowing raw gas to dump into the exhaust, which ignited inside the cat. I had to replace the cat and the coil. The dead coil never set a misfire code either...and let me tell ya, there was NO denying that misfire!
BodybyFisher
I could be wrong, but I don't think that OBD1 systems post a P0300, is that true? I just looked through my book of OBD1 codes, and you are right sir. There is no misfire code listed. I stand corrected.
BodybyFisher
However, while the OBD system does not report a misfire, with the correct equipment, a misfire can be detected. I am not sure if a Tech 2 can detect a miss Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
Bruce Nunnally
I would diagnose this by taking it to the Dealer for a warranty repair, loaner car, free soft drink, and window shopping of the new cars. Otherwise I agree likely to be overheating cat or something dripped onto one of the dual cats.
