Change head gaskets will nto start

i have a 1996 sts it has bad headgaskets we remove the motor frome the bottom,and replaceed the gaskets put it all back togather. it will not start i hae check for sparks i do not have any i have power to coil pack on one side.all wires are plug in i am lost please help;thanks ftime

Did you make sure you installed the timing chains with the correct indexes?

ftime; yes i did ihave look at all the things it could be maybe i need to take off the coils and get them check or just go get a code reader my check engine light is on

You dont need a code reader. Go to HOW TO at the top of this page, go to DTC CODES and follow the directions on how to pull the codes and post them here.

I would, listen for the fuel pump, check the crank sensor connections are correct, check grounds, check ignition wire routing, recheck all connections

thanks body, i tried it and i look for these code on the how to but i am steel not getting it here it is . the codes pc 603-h, ip1552-h, no acm, nosdm, tc61-c, rs16, 34, 60-h. pz 1552-h, 1558-h,1971-h1982-h 2471-h 2016-h. no-irc. rf2560-h. no-ccp. ---pcm??? so i think the history i should not have a problem with it . if you can please help. all wires are on, six ground two gray plugs one on the top by the thor, one by the trans . thanks ftime!!!

Make sure you have the correct connector on each crank sensor, there is a top and bottom crank sensor.

P0603 - Control Module Long Term Memory Reset

B1552 - Keep Alive Memory (KAM) Error

B1558 - BCM EPROM Checksum Error

B1971 - Inadvertent Power

B1982 - Device Power Circuit High

B2471 - Interior Lamp Fault

I don't see 2016

I don't see any immediate codes that would cause you not to start, did you make sure the injectors are plugged in? Is it backfiring at all? What did you use to line up the 3 timing chains?

thanks body yes i had a brake in the wire to the bottom crank wire the car starts but it still smokes i may have to take it out again and have the head look at i will let it run for a little longer to see if it stops smoking. thanks again body wish me luck talk to you in a few days to let you know. ftime!!!

Hey thats great, it will smoke like hell till all of the oil burns off. I recall KHE (Kevin) saying that he was concerned and stood by with a fire extinguisher... YOU might consider that in case it flame up from oil on everything...

ok body it has a miss i do not know if i need to change plugs or if my timing is off when i put it in to gear it turn off if the timing is off will have to drop the motor to change the timing or can i do it a some other way thanks ftime!!

I would immediately do a compression test.

Did this mis begin immediately on start up?

This is a 96, are you SURE you have all of the ignition wires routed correctly?

Are you sure all of your coils are good?

How old are the ignition wires, test them with an ohm meter

I don't see a P0300 misfire code

P0101 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor Performance (make sure the MAF is connected and the tiny wire is clean and intact)

P0603 - Control Module Long Term Memory Reset (nothing)

P1108 - BARO to MAP Sensor Comparison Too High

P1520 - Transmission Range Switch Circuit

P1599 - Engine Stall or Near Stall Detected

P1632 - Theft Deterrent Fuel Disable Signal Received

Check the MAP to see if the vacuum hose is disconnected

You are not getting a misfire P0300, check the MAF and MAP for correct installation

After you confirm the MAP and MAF installation clear the codes and start up again.

i have went in to the map and check all wires i put them back and guess what i will not start. i put all wires back like i toke them out #1on coil to #1on cly.#2 on#2 #3on #3 ect. i can not clear the codes give me one more hent!!! thanks ftime.

Here it is, keep in mind that the two screw holes on the ICM face the rear of the car so you get proper alignment of the coil numbers. This is directly from a 96 service manual. Check all connections at the ICM including power connector

Recheck the crank sensors, I dont like that you had a problem with one of the wires. PLEASE make sure that the correct wire is connected to each sensor! If you need me to look in the manual for the correct wire colors for the crank sensors let me know... TOP AND BOTTOM matter for the wire connectors

By the way, I vaguely recall someone finding the Chilton's manual had the wrong ignition wiring routing. Do check it

I was wrong the HAYNES manual had the spark plug wiring wrong but make sure you check your wiring, see this link:

hey body i have tryed all the things still no start today i pulled all the plugs they all are wet!!! i have some new codes i think the inj are open . i dry the plugs and blow out the cly. put all the plugs in the same thing wet!!!, could that be what made it run like it was missing in the frist place here are the codes pc-101 pc-107 pc--201--202--203--204--205--206--207--208--603--1108--1520--1599--1552--1632.. ip-1911--ip1552--ip-2781--pz1552--pz1971--pz1982--pz2474--pz2016--pz2560--rc61--rc34--rc60-- if you know were i should began on this one let me know maybe if i pull the batt it will reset or is there a nather way thanks ftime!!!

alright body i have got the car started i think my timming is off i look at and older entry and i see some one has check their timming with out removing the motor if you know this to be ture ,dotell if you save the time and effer help with that up date i can not fine it on this site. thanks ftime!!!

I have never done this job. It certainly is sounding like a timing or spark issue. Did you ever check the routing. Did you check the crank sensor wires for correct Top and bottom connections?

Please start responding directly to things that are suggested as its hard to know what you have and have not done. HUMOR ME.... if you checked the ignition wiring PLEASE TELL ME.. same with the crank sensor wires

Hopefully one of our time serters will know the answer to your question

mike i am in michigan yes i can answer all your items. i have check the crank sen. i have check the spark plug wires they are all correct, i do have the compression test it does not add up here it is cly#1-190 cly#2-90 cly#3-190 cly#4-90 cly#5-190 cly#6-90 cly#7-190 cly#8-90 ever thing eles i can not find a problem . so let me know what you think . ftime!!!

This is why I said to do a compression test immediately in my #12 post. This is not good news ftime, I am sorry. I recall the guru saying that the cam can be out 180 degrees. What did you use to set the timing chains?

When you decide to do this again we will post a schematic showing the timing chain indexes... Good Luck

You really need to remove the timing cover and front cam cover and verify the cam is in proper time. The low compression is the key to the rough running. You may need to turn the crankshaft up to seven turns in order for the timing marks on the intermediate sprocket and the crank sprocket to line up.

I am afraid you had it off time slightly and the valves got bent and are not sealing off. That would explain the low compression for all cylinders on the front bank but you need to verify the timing.
