Cadillac sts 99 wont start but backfires

Recommended Posts

\My 1999 cadillac seville sts will crank, backfire but not start. I just finished doing a head job on it. Timing chains are well aligned with timing marks. Doubled checked my coil pack`sparkplug setup. All the grounds are well placed. my injectors are fine. Changed every seal on my engine. Every thing at my knowledge is tight. BTW for the head gaskets there new and I also put in new time-sert inserts. After putting everything back in place the car cranks, backfires but wont start. After pulling out a spark plug it looks like it drowned in gaz. The sparks are very good. I wanna know if theres any special procedure after reinstalling the engine. Maybe I missed out on a step and thats why im posting here.

I would triple check my ignition wire routing. I would make sure my crank sensor wires are connected to the correct crank sensor, there is an A and a B sensor wire.

thx guys, where are those crank sensors^

Facing the leading edge of the engine, the crank sensors are to the RIGHT of the oil filter adapter. They sit one over the other and the wires must be connected correctly. Mike

yeah its all good there no problems, Ihavent touched the crank sensor so it didn<t move during my head job. My ignition wire routing is also good. I rechecked my timing chain and its good. I dont see my timing being a cause. But to Rangers reply I wonder if timing marks are aligned how could it still be out of time. I plugged my car on a computer and there is no dignosis for anything. All my injectors work and and the spark plugs have nice sparks. But as soon as I check em to there all covered with gaz.

Is your CAM sensor connected?

How old is the fuel?

There is actually a procedure to do a crank position learn, think about that one, I don't know anyone who has NEEDED to do that, but its worth thinking about

Could the plugs be so wet it will never start?

If I am not mistaken, pushing the accelerator to the floor shuts off the injectors, you might try that.

Describe how you are determining ignition wire routing is correct. I would try to dry out the cylinders of gas, squirt oil in the cylinder and try again

Can a faulty fpr be the reason for flooding the sparks plugs? If so is the bleeder dripping only be the symptom of a bad FPR.

When you say bleeder do you mean the schrader valve on the fuel rail? Or are you talking about the vacuum port on the FPR?

The FPR has a vacuum port on it, if there is any fuel present in that vacuum port replace the FPR

yeah sorry I meant vacuum line. Mine does not have any trace of gas.

When you are cranking look at that vacuum port and see if it spits fuel, have someone crank it. You are getting too much fuel for some reason. If the engine is flooded you wont be able to start it till you clear that, its like throwing a match in a bucket of gas (not that I would ever want to test that theory, LOL). But wet plugs create starting problems.

I am not saying that you ARE out of time and I have never messed with the timing chains so I do not speak from experience, but I do seem to recall our old Guru mention something about the timing marks only lining up one every 7 revolutions or so. That is why I mentioned it.

I hope KHE stops by here, I don't have any experience with the timing chains either. I have often thought that I would dread messing with them

Thx for you<re help guys I solved the problem. Thx to you<re quote treiple check the ignition wiring hehehe. In my haynes manual they got the coil pack order upside down. THey give me a plan with view from front of the car ( cylinders are good) but the ICM is in the wrong order. The engine started with one hit and turns like a charm. I have a video of me doing the time sert repair with the engine still in the car. It was pretty easy doing the job without removing the engine. I<ll start a thread soon on tips of doing a head job with the engine in the car. I held myself from doing so since I still didnt managte to start the thing but hey since my efforts came to a good conclusion I might as well. Thx for you<re help guys

Definately post you photos and any tips you have, you are now in the unofficial Hall of Fame. Let us know how it runs in the coming days, Mike

WOW! Kudos. General consensus is that it is much easier to remove the engine to do that job. To bad I am on dial up. I'd love to see it.

Yeah I'm in the process of editing the video so I'll post it here soon. As the engine started it made a loud clicking noise since 12 lifters we're brand new. After a few minutes and that the oil got to these new lifters, it sounded like a meditating monk. I snapped it real nice on the highway and guess what, NO MORE OVER HEAT. I never really posted before on this site but got me a lot of useful information here. Thx guys.
