Powe steering noise after repair of leak!!!!!?????

I have a 2000 Cadillac Deville DTS. Recently I took my car to my mechanic to repair a coolant leak and a power steering leak. On the power steering leak they found a line leaking which they r2 and the leaked stopped. After I noticed a hissing/humming noise coming from the power steering system. It only happens when there is no pressure applied to the steering wheel. The slightest pressure applied and the noise will go away. At times it seems intermittent and also sounds like the hissing turns into a gurlgling sound. It almost sound like its electrical but I know its not. I have taken it back several times to the mechanic with no luck. Right now its in the shop and he said its definately coming from the rack where the lines attach. I hope he doesnt try to make this like its a NEW issue because I did not have this noise until they changed that line. Any ideas/suggestions so they dont try and blame it on something else thats going to cost me more money?

It's probably air in the system, which is normal after having work done anywhere in the PS sytstem. The thing to do is to make sure that the PS fluid is at the Full mark and drive the car around for at least a half hour, with lots of turns and such -- not a straight-and-level cruise on the freeway. Then, check it again and top off to the Full mark if necessary. That should do it.

Well guys Im stumped and so is the mechanic. He replaced the fluid and he then I bleed the system with no luck. He said he is going to do some research for any service bulletins pertaining to this issue. I told him I wanted him to change that line he replaced next visit also. If it doesn't fix my issue I will take it to Cadillac. If Cadillac finds issue with his workmanship and I pay them to fix it do you think I can take it to small claims to recoup my money? Im fed up already and I dont know what the issue can possibly be!?

What caused the problem in the first place a leak? How bad was the leak? Did the steering pump run dry and did you drive it? You say hissing/humming that does not sound like air, air creates that tell tale hydraulic whine, like ERRRRRRR... Is it possible that the hose he replaced is hitting the frame and you are getting a radiated noise?

Typically air in the system gets LOUDER when you turn the wheel in either direction, this sounds like something is grounding out mechanically

Originally it was a leak but that was all. My mech replaced the leaking hose and all of a sudden I have this noise. Been back to the shop 3 times. They have secured hoses and etc. Maybe the hose is not the right p/n or manufactured wrong. All I know is I never heard this noise until the hose was replaced for the leak. But they can't find anything!

Ask if its an aftermarket hose. I assume it was the pressure side?

The line they installed was AC Delco which I am assuming it is the OEM for this car. Is anyone aware of the TSB bulletin that was for the power steering? It was a noise issue but I can't find much on it. Can someone tell me the OEM part number for the pressure hose? If it is AC Delco I would prefer to get another hose just to eliminate maybe a defective batch of hoses. Thanks in advanced. This is such a great forum!

I doubt this is a bad hose especially if it is an ac delco. Call a dealer and ask them to look up the part number. You can go into ac delco's site and search there to.

very carefully describe the noise you are getting for us

I still believe there is air in the system. The hose is just a hose I do not see how it could be bad. Careful and proper bleeding should eliminate the noise.

The saddest thing in life is wasted talent

It sounds like its hissing and you can hear it in the car with the windows up and its really audible around the drivers front wheel. THE NOISE NEVER WAS THERE UNTIL THEY REPLACED THE HOSE! We have bleed it several times with no luck. I must have turned the wheel from left to right 200 times with no luck plus I drive it to work so I doubt its air in the system. We have tried changing the fluid again with no luck. They will be replacing the hose again Wendsday to see if it was a bad part. The mechanic is saying when he puts a stethoscope to the rack it sound like its coming from from the rack. Why would the rack all of sudden have something go wrong when they changed the hose for a leak? Is my luck that bad that all of a sudden something else in the same system would go bad? When you put any pressure on the wheel the sound goes away!

I did notice a few weeks ago a svs stabilty sys kept coming on but it was extremely cold outside. What would that pertain to? Do you think the valves in the rack could be going bad?

It was a faulty hose from AC Delco. R2 the hose and the noise is gone!!!!

Was there any visual indication of the hose failure mode?
