KenD
I had the wrecker phone me today regarding some tires that I was inquiring about. I was looking for 225/60/16s as they are stock, but the didn't have a set of 4, just paired sets. They called me saying they have a brand new set of 4 (90% tread life) of 215/70/16s that I could have for $110. They also indicated that it would change my speedometer reading slightly, but only about 4km/hr while travelling at 100km/hr. I don't want to spend $800 on new tires if I don't have to, but the size difference has me a little concerned. Any opinions? Ken Ive been running a 16 inch tire/rim with 3 17 inch tires/rims for a couple months and havent noticed anything strange. I'de have to do the math to see if your combination has a bigger speed difference than mine did. I dont know if I would be comfortable changing the size for the long run, but that would just be to make me feel better. If its $110 for four, I think Ide try it out. KenD
wow, thanks BBF. So, if I read it correctly, changing the tire size to 70/16 will actually reduce my speedo, hence saving me a few red light camera tickets. LOL Funny thing is that they did the calculation and indicated that I would be increasing my speedp not reducing. Can anyone verify that? BodybyFisher
Well if you think about it, a 70 is a higher profile than a 60 profile tire. In the same distance, the 70 will make less revolutions than a 60, thereby telling your speedometer you are going slower. The danger here is that IF you DO the speed limit according to your speedometer, you will be going faster than that, which a radar gun will pick up. I did not do the calculation, have you figured out the inverse, IF you speedometer reads 60, how fast are you going? BodybyFisher
By the way, the only thing that concerns me here is the potential to negatively impact your handling, the higher profile tire may flex more in turns giving you a mushy handling feeling... The only other thing that comes to mind is, how will the PCM interpret the slower wheel rotation, for transmission shifting, TCC engagement, ABS, etc The 'added' drag may through the tranny OUT of OD lockup too easily. Now don't consider this gospel, I am just brainstorming here, and examining potential pitfalls here. Every tire gets sized a bit different depending on where the tread is considered to start and stop. You can have two tires (different model or brand) that are marked with the same size that are actually a bit different. The way to be exact, if that is what you are trying to do, is to pull the specs for each tire and look at the revolutions per mile (or what ever they use for a scale) and calculate the two different tires as a ratio. Then you will get the real number. Of the top of my head, your speed should be slightly reduces on your speedo due to the 70 series, saving you a few tickets. Ken With these higher profile tires, your car will ride more smoothly/floaty. They are also slightly narrower so you will notice slightly better fuel economy. The downside will be some reduction in handling. Also, it's possible you could have some rubbing (spring support) due to the larger diameter tire. But for $110, you can't loose too much. You might want to have just one tire mounted to try on the car to check for rubbing. The cheapest place I have found for mounting and balancing is Walmart. They will do it for $10 per tire. Please let us know how it goes.

KEn Ken, The 225-60-16 Tires have a diameter of 26.630" and the 215-70-16 tires have a diameter of 27.850". For each revolution of the tire, you will travel farther in the same amount of time with the 215-70 tires. Your speedometer will read low by 4.6%. Ahh, that is correct, I get this concept confused at times. I thought the 70 would travel less distance. But I think my conclusion was right for the wrong reason, if he is doing 60, he will actually be doing 62.8, not an earthshaking difference, however. At 65 he will be doing 68. thanks Kevin Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

Ken I did the same thing two weeks ago, I got 4 Michelin Symetry's for $100 from my local scrap yard off of a 2004 Deville. When I got home I discovered that 2 were 90% and 2 were 70% (one was plugged), they were obviously put on at two different times. But, I got 2 90% tires for $100, now I'll buy 2 new ones and be in good shape.. KenD
no kidding BBF. I always thought this was the poor man's way of getting parts, but I've save so much money using them, I can buy other tools and some flowers for the wife every once in a while. Ken Well, to be honest, in my case it IS the poor man's way of getting parts, It would be hard for you not to know that the Real Estate Industry is not a mess. I was in the Commercial Real Estate industry as a commercial real estate appraiser and the market has been horrible. I was laid off in Jan 2008 and have been on unemployment. So when I went to Costco to check out the tires, the prices for the Symmetry were $129 each due to the oil prices, my mouth dropped. That is when I when to the scrap yard for a new Key Fob and saw the 2004 with the Symmetrys.. My tires were worn badly and were now bad in wet weather, so I figured for $100, I dodged a bullet for the time being. But the good news is that I just got a great job in the somewhat related field of construction management and my first assignment starts Monday at the Miami Airport for about 4 weeks... Its VERY exciting to get away from the troubled real estate market and a career that I hated for 15 years. Let us know how the tires work out, at the worst, if you hate them, you can always sell them on craigslist.com for the same price Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
