Just changed out the starter on my 76 eldog and the car still won't start. All it does is keeps cranking, could it be fuel related? I put a little gas in the carb to see if it satrts it turned on but only for about 2 seconds...

Check the fuel pressure - I will bet the fuel pump is shot. A carbed car should have 9-13 psi fuel pressure.

Isn't that an electric fuel pump? Is this car fuel injected or carburated?

How do I check the fuel Pressure? Do these cars have a fuel pump relay or fuse? How about a FPR?

It all started when I had left the car running for awile for about 5 to 10 min. and all of a sudden the car cuts off after that it wouldnt turn on..Could I just be all out of gas?

It carburated...

If its carburated, try this quick test. Take off the air cleaner, with the car off, look down into the carburator primaries and open the accelerator using the linkage, you should see a strong stream of fuel from each primary barrel pushed by the accelerator pump. If you pump the linkage and get no gas you probably don't have fuel pressure.

According to my 1979 Chiltons manual, you have a standard mechanical fuel pump. The manual states, that models that have EFI have two electric fuel pumps. Verify that you have a mechanical fuel pump by following the fuel line to the fuel pump on the engine. You can detach the fuel line from the carburator, disable the ignition so it won't start (pull the connectors off the HEI distributor) put the fuel line in a large coffee can and have someone crank the engine for 2 seconds, fuel should be pumped out. DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NO do this if you have electric fuel pumps, VERIFY that you have a conventional fuel pump.. They say the fuel pump is located at the left front of the engine.

Chiltons says that your fuel pump pressure should be 5 1/4 to 6 1/2 psi for the carburated engine.

If it tried to run after dumping some fuel down the carburetor, you are either out of gas or the fuel pump has quit.

I'm not familiar with that year of Caddy, but I would hazard a guess that the fuel pump is driven by the engine. If that is so, it will take some cranking to get fuel back to the carb if you did run it dry. I would put 5 to 10 gallons in the tank and crank it over. Limit your cranking to about 15 seconds at a time. Let the starter cool for one to two minutes after each cranking session. This will keep you from roasting your starter.

You should be VERY CAREFUL about dumping gas down the carburetor. You can cause a fire or liquid lock the engine if you put too much gas in.

If I have an engine that has been run dry, I will pour about 3 ounces of gas down one of the vertical vent pipes on the carburetor. This puts the gas into the float bowl and will usually run the engine for about 30 seconds. Usually that will be long enough to have the fuel pump get it's prime back and start pumping again. This procedure saves starters, but still has the chance of starting a fire due to spilled gas. SO, BE VERY CAREFUL IF YOU TRY THIS!!

Always have a fire extinguisher handy when messing with gasoline! :fireman:

If the fuel pump is bad then this will not help.

Take Care,

Britt

If it started and ran for a few seconds when you put gas in the carb... it IS getting spark.

It is NOT getting fuel.

My first guess is you are either OUT OF GAS or the fuel pump died. :D

First thing is ... put a few gallons of fuel in it. As NAVION said... you can CAREFULLY pour a couple of ounces down the vent tube to put fuel in the float bowl.

The fuel pump is on the lower front, drivers side of the engine. Right behind the power steering pump... (Ithink)

It is bolted to the engine by TWO bolts. There are also TWO fuel lines...one going to the carb... one coming from the fuel tank.

I think that engine has the Rochester Quadrajet carb on it.

There is a fuel filter INSIDE the carb... right where the fuel line screws into it. It is POSSIBLE but NOT PROBABLE that the filter is stopped up.

To remove the pump, I would suggest getting a LINE WRENCH that fits the connections on the fuel lines connecting to the fuel pump. (I think it is 9/16)

That way you don't round off the fittings on the fuel lines.

That is known as NOT GOOD. (don't ask how I know THAT)

If it is the pump, it is pretty easy to remove. It CAN sometimes be tricky getting it back on, because it is driven by an eccentric cam bolted to the end of the camshaft.

On reinstallation... you may have to bump the starter a LITTLE BIT AT A TIME... to get the small side of the eccentric towards the fuel pump.

IF AT ALL POSSIBLE, try to get the two fuel line connectors started in the fuel pump before bolting it up. It may not seem like a big deal, but if you can't get the threads to line up properly, after installing the fuel pump, you will end up having to pull the pump again.

That can cause BAD WORDS to emanate. :D

If I can help... just holler at me. :D
