2009 Corvette ZR1

$100,000 Corvette supercar aims to best exotic rivals

The Corvette ZR1 has a clear panel in the hood that provides a view of the engine.

The fastest, most powerful and most expensive Chevrolet Corvette ever will roar to life at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month.

Boasting a 620-plus horsepower V8 and a price expected around $100,000, the 2009 Corvette ZR1 is the result of General Motors (GM) chief Rick Wagoner's challenge to build the ultimate Corvette.

The ZR1 aims to match the performance of supercars like the 612-horsepower $273,845 Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano F1 coupe, which accelerates to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds.

"Our goal with the ZR1 is to show that an American supercar can deliver performance that beats exotics that cost two, three or four times as much," Chevrolet general manager Ed Peper said.

Chevrolet hasn't announced the exact price for the 2009 ZR1, but the supercar was born when Wagoner asked the Corvette team to show him what it could accomplish with a $100,000 Corvette.

Within GM, the secret project was referred to as the Blue Devil (Duke University will Love this!), a reference to the mascot for athletic teams at Wagoner's alma mater, Duke University. The super-Vette features a supercharged 6.2-liter version of GM's legendary small-block V8 engine, extensive use of lightweight carbon-fiber body panels and a host of other performance upgrades.

Chevrolet hasn't revealed performance figures yet, but the ZR1 will have a top speed in excess of 200 mph and will be able to race from zero to 60 mph in first gear.

"The Corvette is really a brand unto itself," said Michelle Krebs, editor of AutoObserver.com. "The ZR1 is a logical extension of that."

The hand-built engines will come from GM's performance-build center in Wixom. The Corvette plant in Bowling Green, Ky., will build the car.

The ZR1 will be recognizable on the street thanks to a clear panel in the hood that provides a view of the engine, a unique, clear-coated carbon-fiber roof and other changes that include massive disc brakes with a shade of blue used only on the ZR1.

It took years to develop the clearcoat for the carbon-fiber because sunlight degrades the material over time. The coating, which only the ZR1 has, uses a special additive to prevent that. The additive alone costs $60,000 a gallon, while the mixture of clearcoat and additive applied to the roof costs $2,200 a gallon.

Loose the pic Mike, you scared the h&ll outta me!

Thats the intent Joe, I changed it for you.... ahh, that's better. Here is your commander in chief unless we get out and vote..just think behind that hag is bubba, they will get a second chance to steal Whitehouse furniture....

I am almost curious what another 4 years of bubba in the frathouse would be like for entertainment purposes, but I am afraid of what damage she would do to the country.

Bbf, I love ya, but that picture is quite disturbing... and I see it changes now, almost daily.....

I promise I'm going to vote.

Could we please lose the picture?? I'm sitting here eating, okay, I was hoping not to have to vomit this morning....

I was going to go on, but this isn't supposed to be political.... sorry. I'd talk about Cadillacs, but mine's in storage for the winter... and what a nice morning it is here, 12 degrees and blasting windy.....

I will say this, #1, that Corvette should be pretty sick when it comes out, and #2, it's lucky the Envoy has some wonderful heated seats in it, because the heating system leaves something to be desired....

I think Obama will get the Dem. party nod, there has been a Bush or Clinton in the White House for 24 years, seems like a lot of people support her because of Bubba. Will be a interesting election but way to early to call. (I've voted since I turned 18, but I have to vote in the school I went to 1st grade in! Seemed bigger then :D ) I'm 42

Come election day, '08, 140 million Americans (nearly half) will not have lived when a Bush or a Clinton was not President.

If there is a God, this cycle will be broken, at least on the Clinton side.

It will be definitely be broken on the Bush side; Jeb dropped out early.

My avatar, a leering ETC taken with a fish-eye about three inches from the emblem, is scary enough. At least the worst thing it threatens to do is embarrass the unwise. However, in practice, I show a vast tolerance for those who don't get it -- and on the East Coast those people are the rule, not the exception.

You missed my interim avatar (thank god). It was a photo of the WTC in flames with the second commercial jet in sight... I took it down because I didn't want to ruin the holidays, it was too harsh...sorry, Merry Christmas was more appropriate...

Yea really, that is pretty scary, and what scares me the most is that they are so self focused and they have gotten this far. Truely amazing. The wheels are coming off next, the US is on jackstands, we have NO national pride, it has been gutted out of us and is put down as somehow unfair or bullying. Having balls is somehow considered abnormal. We can only fight with one hand behind our backs or its somehow not fair. The press won't wear flags its not PC, what has happened to US? Our education is ridiculous, their futures suck, we shipped out manufacturing, what happened to apprenticeships, etc, eveyone wants to work at a Mc Donalds and drive a Corvette. Why did it get to the point where everyone went to college what happened to studying for a 'trade', trades we don't have anymore, why no long term thinking?, why has education become diluited and watered down? what is wrong with failure?, all we do is create failure by not pushing and testing and failing people...we have become weak and are led by weak people. What happened to goals? Polling and Money, I say yes and you say no mentality, and the topics are narrow. what happened to the PRESIDENTS fitness program we needed to do so many push up, sit ups, squat thrusts, run, etc... Kids come to school SO out of shape, you make them run they have a heart attack.. or they can't do it then they fail, nd its of course NOT his fault, you humilate them unintentionally, legal suit, .. we are rotting.
