manowar77
Hi, i am going to change the altenator on my STS 95 with the Northstar engine in it, and i have some questions! 1. Is the altenator connected to the coolant system? Do i have to drain the coolant system before changing the altenator? 2. I am thinking to buy a new altenator from Rockauto and Beck & Arnley´s alternators seems to be cheapest in buy, is Beck & Arnley good stuff or crap? Best regards Jänkarn from Sweden Roger Martinsen
FlamingGoatBalls
I dont know anything about Beck & Arnley but I have always head board members say to replace the alternator with a new AC Delco or you are going to be sorry in a year or so. Best regards Jänkarn from Sweden Some alternators have coolant running through them, but I don't think that happened in 95, someone else will clarify that. This is not an easy job to do, I would use an AC DELCO alternator so you don't need to do it again, many have had repeat problems with aftermarket alternators. If you look you should be able to see if you have an alternator cooled by your cooling system... here is a member that is currently replacing his: http://caddyinfo.ipbhost.com/index.php?showtopic=12881 Here is a photo showing the alternator Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

Northstar
The 1998 STS has coolant running thru the alternator but yours does not.
KenD
Your 95 will be the same as my 94. No coolant. I hope you have small hands. If you've been following my thread that bodybyfisher has linked to, you'll see that this is no easy task. Although if I was going to do it again, I know I could do it much faster than the 3 + hours it's gonna take me. rmac-etc
I was wondering if when replacing the alternator there is anything else that should be replaced out of convenience or whatever ... battery cable for instance??? I have been considering replacing the alternator and starter on my 95 etc (160k) before they fail.
johnnydone
if a 95 is the same as my 97 concours you can try this i guess my 97 is different take off belt ihad to remove battery to do this to make room ac lines in way take off top cover take off top alt mounting bolt through wheel well take off plastic bottom cover plater remove right fan remove wires remove remaining 3 bolts on altenator use 15 and17 ratcheting wrenches makes job easier after alt falls remove metal acess pan from bottom and work alt till it falls out installation is reversal of steps
manowar77
Im buying an AC Delco alternator from Rockauto, the price for this one are 162 US $ when bought from the US, if a had bought the same altenator in Sweden it would had cost 3500 SEK = 500 US $! Talk about price difference!! Roger Martinsen

The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises

Regards, Warren Hi Warren, to have it shipped to Sweden by Global Prioryti mail costs about 60 US $, so including the alternater and shipment its still half the price if i had bought it from Klintberg & Way in Sweden!
