IT'S FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!

My Timesert repair is complete. :D Fired her up and took her for her first run this PM. Beat the

p!$$ out of her too. Runs stronger than she had in months. Sounds good, plenty of power, coolant temperature stable. So far all looks good.

Ended up doing a lot of other work I hadn't planned on as well. but it was all needed - 10 years and 91k miles takes it's toll on a car. And I have a few more things to do.

It's throwing ABS/Traction control codes that I need to retrieve and a PO118 that I cleared.

The rear headgasket leaked, though I haven't been able to determine where - bears further investigation...

So far so good.

Thank you very much to everyone who instructed and encouraged me! :D

Congratulations. I only wish I had done that instead of getting a remanufactured engine. I really did want to keep my original engine. I just didn't have the time or a place to work do do the job, and needed the car every day.

Thank you.

So I just go to start her up and no start!

I'm getting a "Service Fuel System" Message on the computer...

Where do I begin looking?

What code, specifically (if any)? Do you hear the fuel pump with the ignition on?

The Hall of Fame... :D Cooperstown was always a dream of mine. ;)

Yeah, I beat the p!$$ out of her this PM (if anything is gonna happen it would happen on the road...) stopped and filled up the gas tank, drove home parked her and when I went to get some groceries a few hours later... no start. "Service Fuel System" message on the computer. So it looks like my job is not finished. Perhaps the rise in the tank float screwed up the circuit (10 yrs. 91K miles 3 months of sitting at the same level?)

If it is the fuel pump and if my car doesn't have an access panell (some do?) I'll send it off to a shop for the repair as I don't have the where-with-all to drop a FULL gas tank.

I will fix this as this Eldo is and will be my daily driver. I'm saving my loot so I can buy a matching black on black XLR. :D

Give us the codes. It's more likely a fuse, relay, or clogged filter. The codes may tell us the tale.

The fuse is OK, haven't checked the relay yet.

I got a PO118 - CTS circuit high input. My (POS?) Actron Code reader says 2 codes are tripped but I've only been able to retrieve the PO118 code. I'm going to replace the CTS and check to see if there's fuel/pressure in the rail.

Bad fuel pump, bad relay, open/shorted wire (how?), clogged fuel filter, bogus FPR (10K miles on current one), no leaking fuel; what else?

To digress a bit: My income has been substantially increased recently, to the level that (second owner) a Corvette C5 can also now be a Cadillac XLR, Corvette C6, Jaguar XK8 or Maserati Coupe. The XLR is on the top of my list for a whole buncha reasons - I like it AND why learn another motor when I now know so much about the Northstar and I am convinced it is every bit as good and in some cases BETTER than the Jaguar and Maserati V8s. AND IT"S AMERICAN! :D

DTC P0118 Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Circuit High Voltage

IPB Image

Circuit Description

The Engine Coolant Temperature sensor is a thermistor, a sensor whose resistance varies with temperature. The ECT sensor signal is on CKT 410 and sensor ground on CKT 808. As the temperature increases, sensor resistance decreases. Low coolant temperature will result in high signal voltage on CKT 410. DTC P0118 sets because the coolant temperature cannot be less than -38°C (-36°F) when IAT is greater than -5°C (23°F) or the engine has been running long enough too warm above -38°C (-36°F).

Conditions for Setting the DTC

Test Conditions

DTCs P0112 and P0113 not set.

IAT sensor value -5°C (23°F) or greater.

OR

DTCs P0122 and P0123 not set.

Engine running with throttle angle 7 degrees or greater for at least 3.5 minutes.

Failure Condition

The ECT sensor reading is -38°C (-36°F) or lower when one of the above sets of test conditions have been met.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

The PCM will illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) when the diagnostic runs and fails.

The PCM will record operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. This information will be stored in the Freeze Frame and Failure Records.

Conditions for Clearing the MIL/DTC

The PCM will turn the MIL OFF after three consecutive drive trips that the diagnostic runs and does not fail.

A Last Test Failed (current) DTC will clear when the diagnostic runs and does not fail.

A History DTC will clear after forty consecutive warm-up cycles with no failures of any emission related diagnostic test.

Use a scan tool to clear DTCs.

Interrupting PCM battery voltage may or may not clear DTCs. This practice is not recommended.

Refer to Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes in PCM Description and Operation.

Diagnostic Aids

If fault is not present perform Powertrain Ground Check and also review Failure Rec. to determine conditions under which and how long ago the DTC set.

Test Description

Number(s) below refer to the step number(s) on the Diagnostic Table.

Checking for an open in the ECT sensor signal Circuit from PCM to sensor. If the display shows 135°C (275°F) to 151°C (304°F) with the coolant temperature sensor wiring harness terminals jumpered together, then the ECT sensor signal circuit and the ECT sensor ground circuit are OK.

Checking for an open in the ECT sensor ground circuit. If shorting the ECT sensor signal circuit to ground causes ECT display to show 135°C (275°F) to 151°C (304°F), then there is an open in the ECT sensor ground circuit.

The Hall of Fame... :D Cooperstown was always a dream of mine. ;)

Don't get carried away now, time-serting your engine is one thing, hitting a major league fast ball, now that is something else!

Glad to hear the Timesert job is done - Congrats! Did the engine smoke a lot from all the cutting oil from the machining? Mine did and it scared the hell out of me until I realized what it was...

It smoked a bit. I spent quite a bit of time cleaning it off with brake cleaner and my air hose.

About my no start problem - looks like the fuel pump. Swapped relays and no go, the fuse is fine and there is no fuel at the fuel rail.

Does anyone have any idea what the flat rate is for a fuel pump change?

No start problem caused by the ECTS not being plugged in...

This in turn threw a PO118 code and "Service Fuel System" on the computer. All's well now. She really tears up the pavement! :D

Gotta get my AC charged, find out why the ABS/Traction Control lights are on and get a four wheel alignment (had to replace one half shaft and hub assy and will do t'other side soon).

Anyone wants to attempt this repair I'll walk you through it, however IMO put another motor in it...

Congratulations, glad you got it running again, what is the ECTS and why did it start the first time did the plug fall out?

Why are you recommending putting a new motor in?
