Water Pump

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am changing my water pump on Saturday. I have the AC Delco pump paid for and waiting at my parts shop...

I understand there is some redesigned cover seal that I must buy also can someone post a scan or photo of what seal I need?

I am buying a Lisle wp socket also..($24)

One more thing turn it clockwise to remove?

Thanks, Mike

Yes, clockwise to remove. I'm not sure how the seal could be redesigned, unless it's just thicker or something. It fits down in a groove in the cover. Limited opportunity for a redesign, at least the way it appears.

Thanks Jason, is this a dealer part? The dealer is closed on Sat, I want to be ready for this job, Thanks, Mike

It is a piece of cake Mike. Easiest waterpump you will ever change. It took me about 2-1/2 hours start to finish the first time. I used a 2' piece of pipe for leverage to get my pump off. I just used steady pressure and it finally let loose and came right off. The lisle tool is not heavy duty so don't over due it and strip the tabs off, just be patient with steady pressure. Study the new part and you will see how it attaches. Good Luck.

Hey thanks Paul, hey if the Lisle is garbage I will buy a better one, who else makes it?

I was going to video tape the job and put it up on Photobucket...

I hear you with its easy, I can remember spending 5 hours changing the big CRAB water pumps on my Dad's Caddy's when I was a kid, if I recall correctly the 429 was a hard pump to use and it had an o-ring fitting at the top... Those were backbreaking jobs...

Hmm, I changed it last year when I did my tensioner but I guess I could replace it again..

The lisle socket will do the job. Mine has done 2 waterpumps and it still looks like new. I think snap-on wanted $75-100 for their heavy duty one.

Here is the redesigned pump cover:

Snap On makes a heavy duty Northstar water pump socket but it's a little costly.

Hey thanks for that info, I appreciate it. I knew something was re-designed, but I thought it was the seal. Should I get that redesigned cover or do I need it only if mine is leaking? Mike

Thanks Paul, for $24, I'll try the Lisle then, it was replaced about 45K miles ago...hopefully it will just pop... I have an 18" breaker bar... Thanks

My mistake when doing mine was attempting to remove the water pump with a breaker bar. It was corroded enough that I ended up breaking several tabs. I ended up going to a place that had an impact wrench and it poped right off even using my damaged socket.

What would you have done instead? Apply less pressure? It shoulds to me like you feel you over powered it..

Mike, the pump cover seal WAS redesigned. I bought one form the dealer (Chevy) for my '97 that was seeping, but never got around to replacing it before I sold it. I think it was around $10.

The problem was the pump was on there tight enough that no length of breaker bar would have removed it. I used about a 4 ft breaker bar that not only broke a couple tabs but also broke the ratcheting mechanism on my 1/2" Craftsman's ratchet. What the water pump needed was the hammer action of a strong impact wrench to break that static friction that was so high.

The thing is, I had started off trying to get it off with a 250 lbs of torque impact wrench at home but that wasn't enough so I used the breaker bar and that broke my tool so I ended up having to go to a shop that had a stronger impact wrench.

That does not give me a lot of comfort about this job, maybe I will get lucky, I will advise how this goes, Thanks, Mike

Mike,

I seem to recall that the Dex-Cooled pumps come out easier than those that used the conventional green coolant. Especially if it has been neglected.
