KenD
For the last two days, I've been getting the battery no charge on my DIC with the battery icon coming up on the dash also. When I turn the car to ACC, it will show 12.3 volts. Once started it will stay then and then drop to 11.6 or so. I have to turn the car off and on a time or two before I can get the DIC message to turn off. Once I get the message off then it will run anywhere from 14.3-14.6. If the car sits for 4 hours or so, then there is no problem. It's when it sits overnight in the garage for about 12 hours is when I have the problems. They all of a sudden started when my Chevy Z71 battery was dead and I had to quickly boost it with the Caddy. Well, I'm thinking that this has something to do with it. The weather really shouldn't be too much of a factor as it's been only about an average of -5 degrees (mid 20s for you yanks) out all winter and in the garage it's a little warmer. BodybyFisher
I never jump any cars, the drain puts too much current load on the alternator. I recently got into an argument with my sister in law because I would not jump her dead Taurus. It is very possible you did damage to a diode or to the regulator within the alternator. That said, pull your battery cables off and clean them really good especially the positive cable (take the two wires in the red insulator apart). Make sure they are tight. KenD
Thanks for the info and the avatar, lol. Yeah, the alternator probably will have to be replaced. I've been lucky so far with it as I think it's still the original, but I could be wrong. I've got the old headlight flicker at night, but when I had a test done to it they said it was holding just fine. I just don't want to start pulling the thing off. It's winter and a little chilly. BodybyFisher
That headlight flicker was what I had with my 91 when my alternator was bad, if you put a sensitive digital voltmeter on it you will notice the voltage varying quickly. You may even notice it on the cars digital voltmeter if it has on. If your lights were pulsing before you jumped the car, the jump didnt cause your problem. We just had someone do an alternator replacement in the last two weeks, its not really a winter job unless you have a garage. Whatever you do make sure you use an AC Delco rebuild... KenD
Thanks Mike! I am wondering if it's okay to get my starter/alternator shop to do the rebuild. They wanted about $150 last time and that would include all new components. I guess it's a chance to take. BodybyFisher
I think its PERFECT! That is what I would do, I have a very good STARTER/ALTERNATOR shop called Montrose Rebuilders near me that does a great job. HOWEVER, if I did it now, I would go and buy AC DELCO front and rear bearings, a brush set, regulator and ask them to use those parts. The last time I had an alternator rebuilt by them they used a chinese bearing that created a whine.... They can rebuild the communicator, run tests, etc. I am not sure if they replace the rectifier bridge, but it might be worth asking how that is handled. If you have a bad diode, I am not sure if the replace all diodes or just one.. I think this is a good way to control quality and to get a good rebuild..
