Front End Popping Sound

MAC

Recommended Posts

I know it’s not easy to diagnose front end problems but when I accelerate and brake I get a popping sound from the passenger side. So when load is placed on the front wheels I get the metallic pop. Similarly when I brake there is sufficient load to cause something to move—like the ball joint perhaps. Sometimes there’s even a double consecutive pop. Any suggestions on what the problem is?

Worn Strut rod bushings can allow the entire lower control arm to move fore and aft, take a look at the strut rod bushing for damage or metal to metal. See circled #5 and #4 (bushings).... Ignore #11 it was for something else. Regis, also had a problem with the strut rod where the strut rod is riveted to the lower control arm as the rivets loosened and he got noise.. Take a look, he has a 94 also I believe...

Here is Regis's thread (if you need lower control arms Regis may have a set for you)

How are your motor mounts? Open the hood and power brake (with your left foot on brake pedal FIRMLY put it in D or R and press the gas pedal). Watch for excessive engine movement.

The saddest thing in life is wasted talent

Mac,

Do you ever get the popping sound(s) on turns? Over bumps?

When I'm backing up and turning my wheel sharply there's a metallic pop--maybe not all the time but it's pretty consistent. It's obvious that something need to be replaced. I replaced the sway-bar bushings not too long ago so that's not the problem. When I go over bumps I don't get the annoying clunk sound.

I initially thought about ball joints but if they are bad enough to cause a clunking noise on braking you would get other symptoms like inner tire wear, the wheel assembly will appear to squat out at the bottom and you will get bump induced noise and you may get a pull.. I had a bad ball joint on my Deville and I was BLOWING through tires with inner tread wear...

You spoke about noise from accelerating and braking which made me think about the strut rod bushings allowing the lower control arm assembly to move fore and aft. Someone mentioned the engine mounts also. In addition, look at your dog bones, if you have them..

How is the steering when you get this noise, is their any wander or directional change? Bad strut rod bushings will also cause directional instability where the car will wander and tend to follow the grooves in the road..

That is true also, a loose CV joint could do that, my friends 2002 Taurus has a loose CV joint that slams when you go from Rev to Drive..

Noises are hard to diagnose in this medium, diagnosis for me involves feel also to determine if its suspension or drivetrain.
