Thanks Mike, a browser spell checking program is just what the doctor ordered! I'm a comp-si major, and have good buddy who is an infostucture architect for Microsoft so I'm obligated to slander Microsoft from time to time. ;) All in good fun.

While I use Google for searches, I would NEVER use their toolbar, too many security issues have been traced to it. There have been VERY recent issues but here is a quick example:

Be cautious

Body while that is interesting it is very old, 2002 version 1.1.58 there has been 38 updates of which 2 are completly new versions. The version now is 3.0.128.1 and I have never had any problem with any of them. As always one needs to keep up a firewall and virus protection as well as adware blockers and spyware blockers and stay away from peer to peer file transfer sites.

I didnt have time to plaster you with details, but within the last month (as I noted "recent"), there was a scare regarding the GOOGLE toolbar...

That is enough for me and I have a hardware firewall, software firewall, norton AV, Spam Buddy, and Ad Aware Pro registered. I don't fool around, I only use MS with its security holes because I have to and I need a stable system.

Here is a little more it affects version 2.0.114.1 also

Here is an August 2005 Symantec update that protects against:

Google Desktop Search Remote XSS

Google Toolbar About.HTML HTML Injection

While this toolbar might be ok, I am reluctant to add things to my computer that open me up to more vulnerabilies, I have a hard enough time keeping XP and IE up to date. Call me conservative but I want as trim a system as possible that is updated from a single source.

Look at this article and see how fast MS jumped to patch what the press billed as a HUGE security problem, I woke up the next morning and it was patched and my computer was re-booted:

I am not a fan of third party internet applications as you can see.

Ok :-) I like it and have never had a problem. I am well protected though. I used IEspell when it first came out but found it had bugs and stopped using it. That was a few years back and I'm sure they have fixed it. And it is a third party applicaqtion.

I have building computers for fun for over 10 years and have tried alot of third party software some free and most purchased and find that Google put a first class product out that I have never had any problems with. I would be more worried about Norton than Google as norton owns your registry now and unless you know how to hack it you will never be able to get rid of all its little jewels it gives you hidden so deep within you would think they share your DNA.

Any ways that's what makes horse races, if every one was the same things would be very dull.

Not trying to start any kind of flame here, just another opinion.

Touché ;)

I have also built computers since 1990 (about 300) but gave up because of how quickly users destroyed them because they refuse to spend the money to protect themselves and they use poor browsing habits,

For what its worth, the Google desktop tool has its own security issues. So much so, in fact, that the US Army has banned it from being installed on a computer connected to the Army network. If the software is found through routine computer scans, you're booted from the network until your local IT officer can rebuild your system.

I've evolved into a mindset much like BodyByFisher's. My OS is Microsoft, most of my applications are Microsoft, and my browser is Microsoft. Understandably, since most of the WORLD uses Microsoft, most of the viruses are written to exploit its vulnerabilities. It's not that Microsoft products are so much worse than others...it's just that hackers get the most ROI when they attack Microsoft software.

In my opinion, Microsoft has built a world class software update workflow...it's automatic in most cases. I do manual updates on my box at home because I have dial-up, and don't always wish a large download to happen when it chooses. But of all the software choices out there, I like the idea of sticking with those that provide quick and ready access to security and feature updates.

I wish General Motors would provide such ready (and free) software updates to its products (our cars).

Again, not trying to start an argument, just posting my point of view. Us Microsoft "fans" have to get each other's backs, because there are few of us out there.
