BodybyFisher
My cousin send me an email. He has a 96 SLS. He wants to have a remote start feature installed on the car for his wife. His mechanic stated that the whole dashboard has to come apart which does not make sense to me. Are these remote starters advised/recommended? Are they hard to install? Thanks, Mike Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm

His mechanic stated that the whole dashboard has to come apart which does not make sense to me. Are these remote starters advised/recommended? Are they hard to install? Thanks, Mike Personally, I would not tear the whole dash out just to install a remote starter...that would be just the beginning of an endless stream of BSR (buzz/squeak/rattle) issues. These cars warm up so fast it doesn't seem like it would be worth the cost. My '96 SLS is blowing heat after 2 miles of driving - from a cold start. I also would be concerned about the compatability issues of an aftermarket electronic device with the onboard systems in the Cadillac. Bill K
I had one on my 90 Linc TC. I have not felt the need to have it on any car since. Just a waste of gas IMO. Installation should only be done by someone who understands alarm systems & electronics cause they are not plug & play.
Ranger
I agree with Kevin. I wouldn't go near one.

canadian95sts
Fisher, I have a friend who had one installed in his 99 eldo. BIGGEST MISTAKE HE EVER MADE. The thing never worked right, and he started having all sorts of electrical problems, trunk would pop open when parked, lights would go on and off when they felt like it, car running or not. Strangly enough, about a week after he had it pput in, he started having all sorts of engine problems, and before you knew it, he had blown a hole through the side of the block. Having more money than brains, he bought brand new NorthStar, had it put in, sold the Caddy and bought a HUMMER H2. I dont think these Caddy's like having strange computers installed in them. just my 2 cents Matt A good friend will come and bail you out of jail...BUT, a true friend will be sitting next to you saying, "darn...that was fun!" www.madd.ca
Hud
I took my car to to the dealer the other day to have some warranty work done to it and they let me borrow a new STS and it had a remote starter system. I didn't like it very much (the starter system-the car was great). Too much to go wrong and I do like new gadgets, but for whatever reason, I would not get one. nitrous1
I installed a Remote start/Alarm system on my 96 STS over the summer and I love it. I bought a system from Asianwolf and installed it myself, but I would recommend having a professional do the job - and by professional, I do not mean Best Buy, Circuit City, etc... Directed Electronics makes really nice stuff and if you go to one of their installers, chances are good that you will get a quality install. I bought a DEI remote start for my Dad about five years ago and it still works flawlessly to this day. The key to a reliable system is definitely in the installation. tjtjwdad
While I didn't see it mentioned, there is always the remote possiblity that the car may need to be shut off as quickly as it was started. I had an instance years ago where the oil pump died. Had a remote starter been on the car the engine would have eaten itself. Jim
