Noisy Electric Generators

Recommended Posts

Here in Central NJ at about 7:50PM (Monday) is when Sandy hit, knocking out power. Electricity was resotred Thursday at about 3PM. I didn't work the entire week because I took Monday off and work electricity was not restored until Friday evening. My neighbor (I live in a condominium/townhouse complex) used a generator 24/7 and it was too noisy and actually inconsiderate. If you have a generator do your neighbors a favor and build a sound-deadening enclosure using Roxul Safe'n'Sound, which is essentially fireproof. It can be purchased at Home Depot. The exterior walls and cover could be plywood and interior walls and cover could be plywood and cement board with Green Glue in between to guard against fire. I would use Green Glue becuase it's an excellent product for soundproofing. I'm no expert here, just suggesting.

Thanks Mac, I am about to buy one myself, I am sharing one with my neighbor right now and yes, they are noisy, thanks for the info, when I get one, this is what I will do.

I would really like one that attaches to the gas, but they tend to be more expensive.

No problem. I was talking to a co-worker today and he mentioned that two people in his neighborhood had loud power generators that were a nuisance. He mentioned that he was going to purchase a generator that hooks right into the main power supply and will automatically turn on if power goes out. He said this type of generator is quieter but is quite expensive at about $1,500 or more. This sound like something you referred to regarding one that attaches directly to gas supply. I haven’t researched, so I’m not sure exactly what's out there regarding these types of home generators.

Also, there is type of sheetrock called QuietRock that can be purchased through Lowes, which is on the same idea as Green Glue except it’s premade. This might be a better option than Green Glue for smaller jobs but it is more expensive at about $50 for a ½” thick sheet of 4’ X 8’. Both Green Glue and QuietRock are excellent products and will do the job. I know about these products because I’ve done research since I’m interested in doing home soundproofing. It just depends on whether you would rather use cement board for the interior walls, which may or may not be a good choice since the hard surface of cement board may reflect sound and compromise some sound deadening that would otherwise be obtained using QuietRock alone or two layers of typical sheetrock with Green Glue. Also, using Mass Load Vinyl can be used to deaden the lower frequency sounds.

This one I have is loud as hell, I moved it toward the back of my yard tonight to get it away from the house, no one lives behind me and its much better.

I want to buy one, but I want a quiet one, if you have any suggestions or ideas let me know

I think I want one that connects to the natural gas line to eliminate finding and filling it with gas.

Thanks Mac, hope your area is recovering NJ got killed

I'm running a gasoline 15000 watt plugged into the meter socket. It's in a plastic enclosure that keeps the noise down pretty well but plan on switching to a natural gas unit soon with auto start and stop, not cheap but no headache and comes in a basiclly sound proof box. Generac seems to have some good stuff

here is the natural gas Generac Guardian Series™ 5882 - 8kW Home Standby Generator for about $2,500. Here is a larger capacity Generac 27 Kw Natural Gas Home Generator on

, which sells for about 10K. It's pretty loud. I would think an enclosure would be needed unless you could put it far enough away from home and neighbors.

I finally got power last night and it went out again tonight, the winds from this northeaster are strong and lots of trees are weak from Sandy.

I bought a 9500 watt/ 60 amp generator yesterday, its runs at 78 db and quiets down as the load decreases. I put it down the back of my yard next to the woods and I hardly heard it.

It has an electric starter, remote and 13 hp engine. It is really smooth and it seems unaffected by the load I am presenting it. It used no oil over night which is surprising as the two I have used during this storm used oil and needed close attention to the oil level. I really like the electric start what a breeze to start it, in addtion it has an automatic choke. I like the display which gives me running time (nice), volts, cycle (why I am not sure) and it will shut down if it needs oil and give a visual warning. It was $700 at Costco they are selling like hot cakes Costco has gone through hundreds of them here on Long island.

I plan to research how best to hook up the entire house to it, it will output 240 volts at 30 amps. I dont know if I would be comfortable with it powering my big two door refrigerator freezer however. While it was running I hooked up my Milwaukee Hole Shooter and drilled a few holes and it was a breeze and the generator didnt flinch..

Thanks for the info guys

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!

I lived the 96 ice storm in northern NY. NO power for almost 2 months in my rural area!

My neighbors never bellyached about that generator screaming 24/7..................

I guess they enjoyed my heat, lights, hot food, tv and hospitality.....................

Nor did they b*tch about my other generator and compressor setup screaming all day

at their houses blowing out their water lines................

I still kiss that $400 15k generator that has been used many times since!
