Do you have a trunk mounted CD changer? Sometimes, the door can be partially ajar on the changer and it attempts to eject the CD cartridge but cannot. This will drain the battery.

To verify the circuit that is causing the problem, disconnect the negative battery cable and connect a ammeter between the cable and the battery. With the trunk open, wait until the PZM "goes to sleep" which is about 20 minutes. Note the reading on the ammeter. If it is high (>30 mA), begin pulling fuses in the trunk fuse panel until you come see the ammeter go below 30 mA. That will be the curcuit that is draining the battery.

By all means follow KHE's advice but, check trunk and glove box lights, I recently solved an overnight dead battery problem and it was the trunk light

I also have a '97 DeVille, and trunk lights, glove-box lights etc. should not be able to drain the battery, since the car is supposed to shut off all power after 10 minutes of inactivity (even if you leave a light on, it turns off). So, if an interior light or something similar is draining the battery, there must also be a problem with the power shut-off. Maybe something triggers the system on -- opening the door, using the FOB (the remote unlocking thing) to unlock the door, popping the trunk are all things that normally triggers the system on again (for another 10-minute interval), and if one of those switches malfunctions, maybe that could cause the system not to turn off. Maybe there are exceptions to this shut-down system, but I am not aware of any except for the radio receiver that responds to the buttons on the FOB transmitter (and likely also the hazard flashers would stay on if activated). I am not sure about the trunk CD-changer, but when the 10-minute timer shuts things off, at least it includes the head unit (radio and cassette deck).

If you cannot find any obvious reason why the battery is draining, you could measure the current flowing from the battery and start pulling fuses. Then you should be able to track down where the problem is. To do this, first wait for the 10-minute timer to shut off power. It will shut off even if the doors, trunk and hood is open, so leave everything open to be able to access the fuses. As long as you do not close or open anything (and not turn the ignition on) the power should remain off. If you are going to connect an ammeter in series with the battery for this measurement, you would probably need to do that first, and then wait 10 minutes. You can check if the timer has shut off by using the radio, as it will shut down when power is lost. Make sure to not turn on anything that drains more current that the ammeter is rated for if you use one.

Btw there is another hidden light under the hood.

PS: my answer partly overlaps with KHE:s, as I did not notice that I was mentioning some things already mentioned. I must have read KHE's post a bit to quickly the first time.

Good point about the retained power feature, are you sure it controls the trunk light also?, I dont know that for sure

The under hood light is a good thought,

Pulling the fuses to see which one sparks will isolate the circuit that is on

The headlight switch is also controlled by the retained power feature. I have seen the parking lights (activated by pulling the headlamp switch out half-ways) turn off after about 10 min when I purposefully left them on once. Unlocking the car (which reactivates retained power) turned them back on. If I work around the car at night with the trunk open, the trunk light eventually shuts itself off, and it can be reactivated again by pressing the unlock button on the FOB, so I would think that it is also controlled by the retained power feature.

that is correct. it is pretty well fault proof. the only thing is if it wont go to sleep then you will have issues

@Divamom5150: Do you find any of the suggestions presented here helpful? There is some information about how the system is supposed to function, and there are some suggestions on how to troubleshoot. If anything is unclear, you can always post a reply and ask for clarification.
