stokes
We touched on this subject a bit in my first post about the Northstar before I bought this car,I have a few concerns before I do it.The manual I have says to remove the surge tank when changing the coolant. Is this really necessary?Wont the entire system, including the tank drain when the purge valve is opened? This is a 2001 Deville,do I add barsleak or some other additive?I thought I read somewhere, could be mistaken tho, that flushing is not recommended in the Northstar. What do you guys say about flushing the system? Thanks in advance for any guidance here. rockfangd
no need to flush. open the radiator petcock or pull the lower radiator hose. Drain as much as possible. Should lose about 2 gallons. refill with fresh Dexcool prediluted coolant, and run thee engine till warm. shut down and when the car cools top it off again. I do not see any reason to have to pull the surge tank unless it is broken. As for the tabs only install them in the lower radiator hose. Completely up to you. Everyone has mixed opinions on them. I use them, but not too much GM FAN FOREVER Nice, clean, luxury= fine automobile
KHE
I've only been able to get about 6 quarts of coolant out of my Deville so I change it every 2-1/2 years vs. 5. You don't need to pull the surge tank but it is not that difficult and you can clean it out. I would not flush the system as it will be very difficult to get it to 50% concentration since less than half the coolant drains out. The Bars Leaks is up to you if you want to use it. GM stopped using it in the early 2000s or so. If you do use it, install it in the lower radiator hose, not the surge tank. rockfangd
I change all coolant every 2 years regardless of what it is. Maybe I am just lucky but I have never had any problem with any vehicle unless it was bad when I bought it. BodybyFisher
It is good to occasionally remove and flush out the coolant tank to get any sediment out of it, which may negatively affect the coolant level sensor. That is what they are talking about, its not too difficult to pull the tank.
