Took The DTS To The 1/4 Mile Track

Recommended Posts

We drove up to Ardmore Oklahoma yesterday to meet some friends that do drag racing...

He and his dad have a couple of REALLY BAD A$# cars.

I decided to run the DTS while I was there...

The Caddy is pretty consistent in times and speeds.

The one major problem it has is the little 4.6 engine moving almost 2.5 tons from a dead stop...lol.gif..lol.gif

It is either doggy off the line...if you just kinda "ROLL INTO IT"..but if you nail it "HARD" taking off...you get wheelspin and wheelhop.

Neither one is good. sad.gif

Here are the results of several runs...

15.80...88.97

15.72...89.16

15.62...91.54

15.60...91.65

15.59...91.67

I got a little bit better at getting it off the line as the day went on and I had a little more practice.

This is the "FIRST TIME" it has ever been to a 1/4 mile track... and it has been close to "TWENTY YEARS" since "I" have been to a 1/4 mile track...lol.gif..lol.gif

A new set of tires...so I can NAIL IT off the line will probably help get it close to 14 sec.

Any and all comments are welcome...

Traction control on or off Jim?

Very consistent runs, very cool

(I guess your high blood pressure, is doing good,)

Check traction control off, and A/C off for best results. I was surprised in my testing that my launches tended to be within a 0.1 and it is the time to peak at 45 mph for the 1-2 shift that tended to vary, which relates to the torque management. ON the other hand, I have read that reductions in the first 60 feet are duplicated in the quartermile.

Exactly...If it would launch "HARD" off the line with out spinning...it might get in the 14's.

Oh well...it was fun trying.

I might go to the 1/4 mile at Denton after I get the new tires and try one more time. :D :D

Thanks for posting Jim. Did they give you complete time slips with 60 foot time, 0-60 etc?

Also I would say at a real track stage as shallow as possible so you get a running start at it.

Yes... I have complete time slips.

This track had an "EXTREMELY SHALLOW" staging area.

They were also using PRO LIGHTS...no yellow light countdown.

When the 2nd car stages... 4/10th's of a second later...it goes "GREEN"...no yellow at all...

Not much time to "GET READY"... :D

60 ft .... 1/8th mile

2.39 .... 10.33

2.38 .... 10.27

2.39 .... 10.22

2.37 .... 10.21

2.35 .... 10.20

I drove past the Denton drag strip 4 days a week to and from school this whole semester...it was always tempting, but I never wanted to pause my glorious hour commute from Gainesville to Lewisville. Maybe this summer...

Also once met the son of the folks that run that fine establishment. Nice guy, he too said it would be well worth my while to take a couple runs at it (although I thought it was a 1/8 mile). I've been sorely disappointed by the lack of open road conducive to running my car all-out in the DFW area. Maybe maybe maybe...though I'd love to look more into a PCM tune first.

No matter where you go, there you are.

Heat soaked after your drive to Oklahoma? Was it just you in the DTS and no luggage, no passengers? Full tank of fuel or 1/4 tank? The STS would tend to run 14.7 sec with a similar power train and a 160 lb Journalist driving. Your DTS does a similar 6.7-6.8 sec 0-60 time, so that supports the idea that your DTS has similar performance.

The DTS is heavier by a bit, but every 100 lbs adds 0.1 sec to the time, so I would have guessed a DTS performance sedan like yours could do a 15 sec quarter mile. The important part is that you had fun, since the 0.x seconds don't matter in the real world of driving the Cadillac.

Yes...it was heat soaked...BAD...all day.

Had to sit in line for each run for several minutes.

The conditions were HOT AND MUGGY.

I also had "OVER" 3/4 of a tank of gas and probably 150 lbs of assorted luggage, ice chests and my laptop in the trunk and back seat.

Plus I weigh about 190...

I was hoping for LOW 15's instead of MID 15's.

I think under better conditions...it might get low 15's and if I am real lucky HIGH 14's.

I would be very happy if I could get a high 14.

:D :D :D
