2000 Deville DTS Misfire P0300

no biggie

I was actually AMAZED the "kid" at the parts store actually asked if it was coil over plug right after i told him the year make and model :o Some of the kids that work there dont know an alternator to a a/c comp

I noticed yesterday some likenesses when i drive. When i accelerate from a stop the SES light will blink for a bad misfire. But when im cruising it will go back to solid. And even some points of cruising it will go away and the car seems like it has all of its power. But if i gun it, it feels a little bit sluggish. So it sounds like it really doesnt like a load on it. But also just idling in park or gear its a constant misfire.

I just think this will all come back to a coil pack..

I think its a sham its all one piece. 4 coils and a module all as one piece. The module is even easy to remove and you cant JUST buy that. Little too pricey to carry a spare!

Im kind of surpised how easy some of the stuff is to change on this car. In the past year Ive changed the fuel pump(30 min) powersteering hose(new one is much better) crankshaft sensors(you can test which is bad) FPR (easy) various little bulbs in interior buttons, a/c pressure sensor (easy). So far stuff has been easy, but i know not everything is!!!

I went and swapped front coil packs with my friends 2000 dts. My car ran PERFECT. Very nice actually especially with those new plugs!! Thats the side i suspected since the one plug that was black was in front. Well i found the problem, now just have to wait for the junk yards to open monday to buy a coil pack.

Sounds like good news then. Also check new coil pack prices on rockauto.com so you have a range for what to pay?

yes, most places want 200+ I figure 75 for a used one on a car with low miles is a good deal. Even if I had to buy 2 of them in the next 5 years its still cheaper.

But yes Im glad for everyone helping me get this worked out B)

That is great that you found the problem, interesting that it went bad when it did

What I have, is a couple of used/ tested coil banks. I carry one in the trunk.

Alot faster and cheaper to have a couple of tested coil banks nearby if one fails. 5 minute job if one fails on the road.

Logan how are coil packs and coil banks tested?, can I get high tension leads for my voltmeter?

I used an ohm meter across the coils to each other and to the spring ground and didnt notice any big difference between any. That doesnt mean there was no problem with any but I suspect the module. It would be sad if 9 times out of 10 its the module that goes bad and they wont sell just that part.

We have a thread here where we began testing coils, I have tested the primary and secondary resistance of coil packs. We have been looking for a more indepth testing method.

Ill find the thread when I get some time

I dont think these coils banks really have a failure mode. There is a IC module also involved. I think they actually live a pretty good life.

Seat of the pants testing. Coil bank either works or not. We test ours a couple hundred miles.

Black and Gray coil packs can be intermixed.

Some IC modules are different. Heads up.

That said, having a spare coil pack in the trunk. Can cut a 10 hour issue down to 5 minutes.

A used, tested, coil bank spare coil. Nice to have. Easy to buy cheap and test before you need it.
