JimD
Not even FDR got it this wrong. This tree-hugger program ran out of (federal tax payer) funding after one week in operation. One week! And CARS paid for something like 23 or 24 million vehicles that would have been abandoned/scrapped in a year or two. One billion dollars per week or 142.8 million dollars per day or 5.9 million dollars per hour. How is that a success story? Well done, voters!! Jim Drive your car. Use your cell phone. CHOOSE ONE ! One billion dollars per week or 142.8 million dollars per day or 5.9 million dollars per hour. How is that a success story? Well done, voters!! "A Regular Laff Riot Did you hear the one about the government faced with criticism about running a $2 trillion deficit, promising to make the hard choices required to reduce spending by $100 million? An article this week in the Wall Street Journal discussed this joke in some detail, including how the Department of Justice has decided to begin copying on two sides of a sheet of paper, and the Navy will delete unused email accounts. Here's an excerpt… Three months ago, President Barack Obama ordered his cabinet secretaries to find $100 million in budget cuts for the current fiscal year to emphasize the point that he, too, was serious about belt-tightening. They responded with $102 million. That is 0.006% of the estimated federal deficit. The list of 77 spending cuts, which the White House is calling "the $100 million savings challenge," reflects the vastness of government -- and its vast inefficiency. Hundreds of millions of dollars in savings were found simply by casting around for areas to trim. Still, the reductions barely scratch the surface. "Some of these cuts are so small they would be a rounding error of a rounding error in the federal budget," said Brian Riedl, a federal budget expert at the conservative Heritage Foundation. They also show how "unbelievably outdated" the government is, he said. "I mean, emailing around the daily press clips instead of printing them out and distributing them? That should not have been necessitated by a presidential order." It would be especially funny, if it wasn't so tragic" -- caseyresearch.com There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. - Ludwig von Mises
Texas Jim
The thought crossed my mind, that if I "DID HAVE" an old car...(which I don't) and with the big rebates on new ones...it would be a good time to buy one. $4,500 for the old car + $4,500 rebate on a new DTS + whatever you could talk them down from the MSRP = a pretty darn good deal. That would be around $11,000 off of a brand new DTS. Get a new $50,000 Cadillac for about $39K. A new car...for a used car price. Not bad. But I agree with you...it is a TERRIBLE program. Giving broke people money to buy a new car that they can't afford and "WE" are paying for it and getting "NOTHING" in return.
BodybyFisher
Come on guys, ya'll are missing the point. This is NOT about stimulus. The environmentalists are happy that 23 million older, bigger, less efficient vehicles are off the highway and that it does not make economic sense is not their concern. What should have been done was an analysis of how many older vehicles we scrap each year through normal attrition, I never saw the analysis For that matter, I have never seen any type of in depth analysis presented to the public regarding anything, only emotional unsupported rhetoric This is a win for the left wingnuts Pre-1995 - DTC codes OBD1 >> 1996 and newer - DTC codes OBD2 >> https://www.obd-codes.com/trouble_codes/gm/obd_codes.htm How to check for codes Caddyinfo How To Technical Archive >> http://www.caddyinfo.com/wordpress/cadillac-how-to-faq/ Cadillac History & Specifications Year by Year http://www.motorera.com/cadillac/index.htm
KHE
Another point the cretins in Congress made part of the bill is the car that is traded must be destroyed. Now, the could be a shortage of used parts due to this idiotic program... With the OEMs discontinuing parts for older cars at an alarming rate, now parts will be tough to find in the junkyards for older cars in. What about people who can't AFFORD to buy a new car? Hopefully in 2010, some of the cretins in Congress will get voted out. This is a very good point, but one that Ill bet was intentional, they really dont want old big cars on the highway.....the bill went through so fast that no one would have realized that type of impact... But environmentalist would not want parts from these cars extending the life of other cars they deem inefficient...
