DaveCarter
A/C wasn't working and I found a completely broken off low pressure line - broken off right where it goes into the compressor. I purchased a replacement line from GM parts direct. Question I have is do I need to do only an evacuation and recharge or is there some other measures I should take since the line was completely broken. I don't have any idea how long it had been broken since I only got the car back in Jan. Thanks, Dave
Dave in Texas
Problems are: you don't know if the compressor is good or not, and how much oil might have been lost due to the bad line. An inadequate oil-charge will damage the compressor..... GM Reman 4.1 engine Dec '
BodybyFisher
Because of the low pressure condition, your compressor should not have cycled, so your compresser should be fine. But because of the air in the system you will need to replace your dryer/accumulator and give the system an oil charge, the question however is, how much of an oil charge. KHE
You will need to add 3 ozs of PAG-150 (High viscosity) refrigerant oil to the system before buttoning it up. Replacing the accumulator is an option or you can let a shop leave the vacuum pump run on the system for 4-5 hours. Use regular refrigerant oil (mineral) to lube the o-rings. Do not use the PAG oil to lube the o-rings. Also, new sealing washers need to be used at the compressor manifold connection. kens96
While the system is down it would be a good time to replace the orafice tube.
DaveCarter
Thanks All. Kevin, I'm not sure what you are referring to in a "sealing washer". There wasn't any washer on either of the ends of the suction line, just the O rings molded into the new line??
joeb
did you remove the manifold block at the rear of the compressor? that is where the sealing washers are located. flat metal washer with a rubber coating. the high and low side lines are soldered into the block. i think the new line assy has both lines. BodybyFisher
Ditto to what joeb said, there are sealing washers there, I may have a photo of them, ill look.... DaveCarter
Thanks. I'm not sure what a manifold block is. I just took the single bolt off the suction hose at the compressor, removed the hose at that end (it was broken just out from where it hooked to the compressor, and took the other end loose at the accumulator. The new hose came with what looks like an o ring kinda think built into a washer or something that seats into the hose Assy at both ends. Is that the sealing washer? KHE
Sometimes there are large o-rings other times, there are sealing washers that look similar to the oil drain plug washers. Look at the old line to make sure. Kevin '93 Fleetwood Brougham '05 Deville '04 Deville 2013 Silverado Z71
