Bose Speaker Static

The Bose stereo in my 96 STS started making a static like noise from the rear speaker area yesterday. You static noise seems to stay at the same level regardless of how low or high the volume is turned and is still there when I play a tape or cd. I can crank up the system and it still sounds ok, the static volume seems to be at same level. Anyone have a similar experience, not sure if it's a speaker problem, amp problem or other?

As a general matter, the symptoms sound like something got into the speaker cone like a washer, a dead beetle or a piece of cardboard. Other possibilities are a torn speaker cone or a warped speaker cone that is dragging on the magnet, but those things are rare these days.
