Changing driving styles

Just an unscientific observation since fuel prices broke the $4.00/gallon level around the end of May. Fewer cars on the road, in particular between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. More two-wheelers on the road (how do you transport groceries with a two-wheeler?).

And I am seeing more and more CTS model Cadillacs on the road around Atlanta (Cobb County). I mean every time I drive from A to B, my mind registers seeing more CTS models compared to a year ago. Well done, Cadillac; get that coupe in production.

Supply and Demand AGAIN at work, the price goes UP, demand drops,

I have changed my driving habits, slow pull away from a stop, cruise control and I stay away from bumper to bumper traffic. Last week I drove from Mantoloking, NJ to Hauppauge, NY, 128 miles, in two hours at an average of 60.4 miles an hour, but that is NOT possible during the day, I left at 12 midnight and got home at 2 AM, great gas mileage of 24.4. I will be traveling off hours when I can

This last trip I went on.... a good part of the time, I drove about 10 mph slower than usual.

Didn't notice much difference in mileage. Maybe 2 mpg on SOME tanks. No difference to speak of on other tanks. MAYBE a small bit less stressful.

But in general, I have eased up just a little.

I would be a bad passenger in your car if the gas prices were $2 a gallon

About 3-4 weeks ago I began to be annoyed by slow moving traffic on the L.I.E. (sometimes referred to as the Long Island Distressway). It took me a day or two to understand folk were trying to conserve gasoline (possibly).

Folk familiar with the L.I.E. will tell you that it often assumes a parking-lot-like identity, but I work odd hours and generally set the cruise control at 72mph in the middle lane. I'm content to travel as fast as I can as long as occasional traffic is passing on my left.

Lately, however, the Expressway speed has returned to normal. I'm left to wonder if the fuel price shock has worn off or if peeps have simply adjusted to it in other areas of their finances?

As an aside, numerous folk at my place of business cried a few years ago when gas topped $3/gallon. Many of the more distant travelers suggested they'd simply have to seek employment closer to home. I've heard no such words recently. Curious.

Regards,

Warren

Mike,

Yes, that was rather juvenile I suppose, but I was trying to walk you away from the STS thing you have going. I explained that to you, didn't I?

I gave you the go-ahead to plant your foot. You failed the test.

At that and the next traffic light I thought you might like to hear the ETC at throttle. I thought you'd have enjoyed it. I know I'd like to hear it from outside the car. :P

I was seriously impressed, I kept saying to myself what a beautiful car. It hunkered down to the road. Thanks for the impressive demonstration. I love that color, it is a green with a gold tint to it, it was calling my name. The Bose stereo blew me away, in spite of what the YUTES around here say about Bose , I was in the middle of a concert wowie. And you were right when I hit 3,000 rpm, it kicks you in the butt.. wow. it just pulled quietly. It would definately improve me image also, Thanks

I am pretty much reserved behind the wheel unless im on the open highway or empty road. It was tough to get back into my car after the ride... you know I need a 2000+

Mike,

Not to make too fine a point of it, but you would look seriously good behind the wheel of an Eldorado. Your father would look seriously good behind a Seville wheel. OKAY, I *DID* make too fine a point of it!

But, it was still a fine point.

Don't expect me to give up on you!

Can I borrow it for a few days, to feel the feeling? I was really impressed with the power, its interesting to feel the difference between the two engines, I am looking at jackc's 93 ETC. I am just a little reluctant to go for an older car and the first NS. Its a beauty too. If I had the garage I lost in the divorce, ugh, I wouldnt think twice, but I dont have the facilities to do big work like a head gasket anymore.

Mike,

The 3000 RPM thing... is one thing that impressed ME about the High Performance Northstar.

It runs good and pulls well at ALL TIMES... BUT... when it passes 3000/3500 it GOES. :D

I have drove some of the REGULAR Northstars and they are not quite the same.

And the sound it has about 3000/3500, all the way to the 6500 redline ... to me... is music to my ears. :D

Four cams... 32 valves... the intake sound... the exhaust sound... it all comes together and sings to me. :D

Maybe thats why I don't get anywhere near the gas mileage that some of you other guys get. :D

If you come to Texas... you HAVE TO drive my DTS. I live close to the west side of town... about ten minutes from I-20 heading west. It is 4 and 5 lane each way for several miles. Good place to kinda step on it when you want to.

It probably is not as fast as the ETC ElDorado's, but it is still a lot of fun to drive. :D:D

There is also a two lane country road that has some 90 degree corners with short straighaways in between, if you want to see what the new version of Four Channel StabiliTrac and Magnetic Suspension is capable of. :D

It is an amazing engine and given Cadillac's engine history, the pinnacle of a long line of fantastic engines

Cadillac engines I have had the pleasure of owning either directly or through my parents

330, 390, 429, 472, 500, 4.9 & 4.6 (275 hp version), what sets the 4.6 apart is that it is only 281 cu inches.

Couldn't of said it better and the 300 HP version seems to pull hard all the way to the red-line.

I have had several 368's, some 4.1's and a a few 425's and a long time ago, a 500.

The 368's seem to be bulletproof. They run forever.

Actually I never had any real engine trouble out of any of them.

Did blow a head gasket on the 4.1. Used water glass as a sealer. Never pulled the head. Ran it several more years with no problem.

Of course I have had a couple of 4.6's also. :D:D I think the are my favorite for now.

Generally speaking, I begin fantasizing about the next vehicle within 24 hours of having acquired the latest vehicle. An '06 Eldorado is that unrealizable fantasy.

A DTS is on my current radar screen and you are largely responsible for lighting that blip. Maybe I'll come around to the CTS, but that time has not yet come.

Regards,

Warren

EDIT: OTOH, given the oil crisis, the next vehicle *might* be a murdercycle. <_<

Yep, no doubt about it, Texas Jim's car is a real beauty ...

I was still drooling over it the next day after seeing and riding in it ...

Warren from the looks of your cars picture, she's a beauty too ...

I haven't seen your model while I am out on the road, but I will be looking ...

I have aways loved two door cars ...

Warren,

I have driven a few '07 and one '08 CTS for loaners when something was being done to my car.

For "ME" they are too small, they ride rough and the seats don't support you very well.

As I said... thats just ME.

I know a BUNCH of people love them, but I am getting up in years and have bad knees and bad hips.

I am only 5' 8" but I like a BIG COMFORTABLE car with nice comfortable seats. The main reason I bought the DTS was that it fit my driving position so well.

The CTS just don't FIT me like the DTS does. Of course... YMMV. :D

I have not driven the 3.6 DI CTS yet. I would like to just to compare them.

If you get a couple of hours one day when you are not doing anything...

See if your local dealer has a DTS Performance Sedan.

VIN 9.

He will have PLENTY of VIN Y's.

Take out an '06 or '07 CTS for a good test drive over varying roads and conditions.

Then take an '06 or '07 DTS Performance Sedan on the EXACT SAME DRIVE, and compare them back to back.

You might be pleasantly surprised. :D

I'll put my knees/hips up against yours any day. Please don't take that the wrong way! It just seems I might be the clear winner. Well, except for the right leg.

I'm 6' 3" and about 215 lbs. I just don't think I'd fit in a CTS with comfort. If a Cadillac isn't about comfort, then what IS it about?

Truthfully, I haven't been in a CTS, so it would be wrong on my part to criticize them. Still, they are unappealing to me.

OTOH, lose two doors and I might have to do a rethink.

Warren

During the few months I actually owned a pair of the beasts,

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y299/WBucket/DSCF0175.jpg (60KB)

you'd have been welcomed to take one for a weekend. That train, however, left your station sometime back in May (I think).

I offered the "Black Pearl" to the eventual buyer for a weekend; he took less than an hour to make up his mind. Smart guy. ;)
